Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Fushimi Inari Taisha, located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, is one of Japan's leading Inari shrines, and is considered the head shrine of the approximately 30,000 Inari shrines across Japan. It is said to have been founded in ancient times, dating back to 711, and is a center of faith where people pray for food, clothing, shelter, prosperity in business, and bountiful harvests. It is characterized by its thousand torii gates (officially many dedicated torii gates) and the fact that the entire mountain has been developed as a sacred area, and the view of the vermilion torii gates lining the mountain path is highly popular both in Japan and overseas.

Its appeal lies in the extraordinary beauty of the approach to the shrine, and the sense of tranquility and accomplishment you get from walking the path leading to the summit (Mount Inari, approximately 233m above sea level). The grounds are dotted with numerous subsidiary shrines and statues of foxes (messenger of the Inari god), and you can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons.

Highlights

  • Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gates) (Although it is called Senbon, there are many donated Torii gates)The tunnel-like path made up of a series of vermilion torii gates is a famous photo spot. Each gate was donated by a company or individual.
  • Tower gate and main hall (Gohonden): The vermilion-lacquered tower gate and the main hall are decorated in traditional style. When worshipping, please show your respect by following proper etiquette (such as clapping).
  • The approach to Mt. Inari and the summit (Four-way intersection): If you climb to the top of the mountain, you will find an observation point where you can see the whole of Kyoto city (the most famous viewing spot is near Yotsutsuji).
  • Sub-shrines and graveyards: There are many small and large shrines (Otsuka) lined up along the mountain path, which can be visited as individual objects of worship.
  • Fox statue (votive stone statue): There are many fox statues holding keys and ears of rice. You can see both religious and artistic aspects.
  • Omikaru Stone: A stone for making wishes. There is a custom that if you lift it and it feels light, your wish will come true.
  • Souvenirs and gourmet food along the approach to the shrine: You can also enjoy eating and shopping along the approach to the shrine, such as at the Inari sushi, fried food, and souvenir shops.

    • Although city buses are available, it is more convenient to take the train to the nearest station.
    • It is possible to visit the shrine by car or motorcycle, but the surrounding area can be crowded and parking is limited, so it is recommended to use public transportation.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • congestion: It gets especially crowded during New Year's, cherry blossom, autumn foliage, and Golden Week. If you want to take photos, early morning (just after the sun rises) or evening is a good time to go, but be aware that the mountain path becomes dim after dark.
  • Worship etiquette: Please refrain from private activities (such as praying or fortune-telling) at the torii gates or burial mounds. Please observe the proper etiquette for worship at the worship hall (two bows, two claps, one bow, etc.) and be considerate of other worshippers.
  • Traffic rules: The Senbon Torii has some narrow sections, so when stopping to take photos, please be careful not to obstruct the passage of other worshippers. Avoid taking group photos or taking photos for long periods of time.
  • Safety measures:The mountain path is full of stone steps and slopes, and can be slippery when it rains or when leaves have fallen. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and warm clothing.
  • Considerations for filming: Please be considerate when taking photos of worshippers or festivals. Do not disturb religious ceremonies within the temple grounds without permission.
  • Funding and AwardsTorii gates are erected with donations (for a fee), so names and amounts are inscribed. You will rarely be pressured into making high-value donations, but be sure to check the opening hours of the shrine office.
  • Food, drink and garbage:The temple grounds are sacred grounds, so please take your trash with you or dispose of it in designated areas. Eating and drinking within the grounds is permitted only in designated areas and should be done responsibly.
