Iga-ryu Ninja Museum (Iga City, Mie Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Iga-ryu Ninja Museum is a museum that introduces the history and culture of Iga-ryu, one of Japan's leading ninja schools. Through actual ninja tools and historical documents developed in the Iga region, as well as a full-scale replica of a ninja house, visitors can learn about practical ninjutsu (stealth operations, espionage, and survival techniques) and the lifestyle and culture of the ninja. In addition to the exhibits, there are also outdoor demonstrations, ninja shows, and hands-on programs such as shuriken throwing, making it an appealing place that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from history buffs to families and foreign tourists.

Highlights

  • Ninja House (Reconstruction) - Numerous devices are on display that you can actually see and experience, such as trap doors, hidden staircases, and camouflaged doors.
  • Ninja tools and weapons exhibits - You can get up close and personal with real and replica ninja tools such as shuriken, ninja swords, and hiding tools.
  • Ninja shows and demonstrations - Classes and performances where you can see ninja skills (movement, disguises, self-defense techniques, etc.) right before your eyes.
  • Experience corner - You can try throwing shuriken and try on ninja costumes (often for a fee) and take photos.
  • Explanation panels and videos - Provides an easy-to-understand introduction to the historical background of Iga-ryu, the actual ninjutsu, and ties to the local area.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Iga-Ueno Station (Iga Railway, etc.) is accessible on foot. The museum is located near Ueno Park and Iga-Ueno Castle. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes on foot.
  • Public transportation: From Osaka or Nagoya, it is common to travel to the Iga area using Kintetsu or JR lines, then transfer to Iga-Ueno Station. Travel times from each city vary depending on your departure point, so we recommend searching for routes in advance.
