Iojima (Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture) Overview (History, Features, and Attractions)

Iojima is a small island facing Nagasaki Bay, west of Nagasaki City. In the past, the island was based on fishing and small settlements, but in recent years it has become known as a tourist destination thanks to the development of hot spring resorts and leisure facilities. The island is dotted with white lighthouses and observation spots, and is characterized by its panoramic views of Nagasaki's port, city, and the opposite shore. The island's location, surrounded by the sea, allows visitors to enjoy beautiful sunsets and night views, and its appeal lies in the variety of ways to enjoy it, such as hot springs, swimming in the sea, and strolling.

Highlights

  • Iojima Lighthouse and Observation SpotFrom the lighthouse on the island's hill and the surrounding observation decks, you can see Nagasaki Bay, the city, and even distant islands on clear days. It's a popular spot for taking photos of the sunset and night view.
  • Hot springs and resort facilities: The island has accommodation facilities with natural hot springs and day spas where you can relax while gazing out at the ocean. We recommend staying overnight at a hot spring and enjoying the night view and morning sea breeze.
  • Beach and seaside walks: You can enjoy swimming and fishing at the small beach and rocky shore. Summer is swimming season and the area is bustling with families (please check the locations and times when swimming is permitted).
  • Walking and cyclingThe island is relatively compact and is perfect for walking or cycling. You can enjoy nature and cityscapes by walking along coastal roads and footpaths.
  • Local gourmet food and souvenirs: There are shops offering dishes made with fresh seafood and processed products unique to the island, so you can enjoy eating your way around and looking for souvenirs (please check opening hours in advance).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest train station: JR Nagasaki Station is the nearest major station. From Nagasaki Station, the most common ways to get there are by bus, taxi, or rental car.
  • Buses and local buses: There are local bus routes from central Nagasaki to Iojima. The number of buses varies depending on the time of day and day of the week, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • Cars and rental cars: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car from central Nagasaki (depending on traffic conditions). The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so you can drive across directly. Parking is available at tourist spots and accommodations, but may fill up during busy times.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Traffic and congestion: On weekends, during summer vacation, and during consecutive holidays, the area may be crowded with tourists and beachgoers. Please be aware of crowded parking lots and limited bus service.
  • weather: As the property faces the sea, it is susceptible to wind and rain. Views and beach walks can be difficult, especially in winter or during stormy weather.
  • Ocean and swimming safetyWhen playing in the ocean, check the tides and swimming areas and periods in advance, and be careful in areas where there are no lifeguards.
  • Hot Spring Manners: When using hot springs, please observe general bathing etiquette (such as pouring water over yourself, handling towels, and rules at each facility regarding tattoos).
  • Environmental protection and etiquette:To protect the natural environment and scenery, please take your trash with you and avoid entering restricted areas and private property. Please be considerate of other visitors when taking photos.
  • Check business information: The opening hours and closing days of accommodations, day facilities, and restaurants vary depending on the season and facility, so it's best to check the official information before visiting.

(Note) For a smoother trip, check the latest access information, facility information, weather and traffic information before your visit. You can fully enjoy the charm of Iojima by combining a stay at a hot spring with a sunset or night view.
