Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Izanagi Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, and its main deity is Izanagi-no-Mikoto, a creator god who appears in Japanese mythology. Located on Awaji Island, which is said to be the setting for the creation of Japan and the birth of the gods, the shrine has attracted faith since ancient times and has been revered as the main shrine and Ichinomiya of the region.
The grounds are a harmonious blend of a tranquil forest and traditional shrine buildings, and the shrine's appeal lies in its sacredness as a place associated with mythology. Surrounded by nature in all four seasons, the shrine is perfect not only for worship and prayer, but also for quiet strolls and photography.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: During New Year's visits, festival days, long weekends, and peak tourist seasons, there are many visitors, and parking lots and roads may become congested. The shrine is particularly crowded from New Year's Day through the first three days of the year, so we recommend using public transportation and visiting early in the morning or in the evening.
- Worship Manners: Please observe basic shrine etiquette, such as purifying yourself at the temizuya (purification fountain) and proper bowing etiquette (generally two bows, two claps, one bow). Please also follow the instructions of the guide signs and staff within the shrine grounds.
- Photography: Photography is permitted in many areas within the temple grounds, but photography may be restricted inside the main hall or during festivals. Please check with the staff or check the notices before taking photos.
- Clothing and footwear: Although some areas of the approach and grounds are paved, they may be slippery after rain or depending on the season. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
- Seasonal notes: Summer can be extremely hot and humid, while winter can be chilly due to the sea breeze. Please dress appropriately for the weather and make sure to stay hydrated. Traffic and business operations may be affected during typhoon season.
Before visiting, it is a good idea to check the official website or local information (at the shrine office) for the latest information (opening hours, festival schedule, transportation information, etc.). Enjoy a relaxing time in this quiet, mythical land.
