Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nima Sand Museum (Oda City, Shimane Prefecture) is a unique museum themed around sand and time. Centered around a gigantic hourglass, said to be one of the largest in the world, the museum hosts permanent and special exhibitions that introduce the properties of sand and the culture and art surrounding it. The hourglass is known for its mechanism for measuring one year, and its greatest appeal is that it allows visitors to experience the concept of time and the workings of nature through the flow of sand. The museum is equipped with explanatory exhibits, an experience corner, a museum shop, and more, making it enjoyable for both children and adults.

Highlights

  • Giant Hourglass (one of the largest in the world) - A large device that measures the length of a year by the amount of sand that falls. You can see the actual scale of the device and its internal mechanism. It is also known for the annual event where the sand is turned over.
  • Panels and specimens related to sand are on display, explaining the characteristics and formation process of sand from around the world, as well as geological information. You can also compare the differences in sand color and grain size.
  • Art exhibits and special exhibitions - There are regular special exhibitions and exhibitions of works by artists that use sand and time as their themes, making it a visual treat.
  • Experience Corner/Workshops - The attraction is that you can learn by doing things with your hands through sand crafts and hands-on programs (depending on the season and circumstances).
  • Museum shop and rest area - You can find original goods and souvenirs, and relax in the cafe space.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: JR Sanin Main Line Nima Station, within walking distance (about a few minutes to 15 minutes on foot). There are often signs directing you to the area from the station.
  • By car: Take the Chugoku Expressway or national or prefectural roads from the Sanin area. Parking is available, making it convenient to visit by car.
  • Via the airport: The most common way to travel is by rental car or express bus from Izumo Enmusubi Airport (Izumo Airport) (travel time depends on the means of transportation).
  • Public transport information: Please check the timetable and access information in advance as there are some routes and times when there are fewer trains.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (just looking at the giant hourglass and taking photos).
  • A thorough tour: 1.5 to 2 hours (if you read the exhibits and also use the experience corner and shop).
  • If you plan to include workshop participation and a stroll around the area, you will have plenty of time if you plan on spending about half a day.

Nearby spots

  • Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine (World Heritage Site) - a historical tourist destination within driving distance. Tours that combine the two are popular.
  • Yunotsu Onsen - A hot spring resort where you can enjoy the atmosphere of an old hot spring town. Day trips and overnight stays are available.
  • Nima's coast and sandy beaches - a scenic stroll along the Sea of Japan. A great spot to enjoy the sea breeze and sunset views.
  • We also recommend touring the historical sites and museums in Oda City, as well as local cultural facilities and restaurants.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The park may be crowded during peak tourist season, consecutive holidays, and New Year's events. The Hourglass Reversal event during the New Year's holidays attracts a particularly large number of visitors, so please check the event information in advance.
  • Exhibition etiquette: Many exhibits cannot be touched, so please follow the warning signs in the museum. Whether or not photography is permitted may vary depending on the exhibit.
  • Weather and clothing: As it is on the Sea of Japan side, the wind is strong and there are large temperature differences. If you plan to walk outdoors, please be careful about what you wear.
  • Public transportation: The nearest station and bus service may be limited, so please check the timetable in advance and plan your return trip well in advance.
  • Barrier-free access and facility information: We recommend contacting the facility directly for details regarding wheelchair access and stroller access.

Note: Please be sure to check the official website or facility for the latest information on opening hours, admission fees, workshop information, and annual events (such as the hourglass reversal) before visiting.
