Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Goshikizuka Kofun is a large keyhole-shaped tumulus located in Tarumi Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and is thought to have been constructed in the middle of the Kofun period (around the 5th century). Built on a small hill facing the sea, the clearly-remaining circular rear and front sections of the tumulus convey to the present day the burial site of a powerful figure of the time. The tumulus is decorated with roofing stones and clay figures, and the name "Goshikizuka" is said to come from the five-colored hues of the roofing stones and surrounding pebbles. The tumulus has been developed into a park and is a popular observation spot with views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and the Harima Nada Sea.
