Goryokaku is a star-shaped Western-style fortress built at the end of the Edo period, and has been developed into Goryokaku Park. The moat and earthworks form a beautiful geometric pattern, and you can enjoy the scenery throughout the seasons. The bird's-eye view from the adjacent Goryokaku Tower is one of Hakodate's most famous views.

It's about a 15-minute tram or bus ride from Hakodate Station, and you can get off at Goryokaku Park. Cars can be accessed via the prefectural road, and there are paid parking lots nearby.

It takes about 1-2 hours to visit the observation deck and stroll around the grounds. If you are visiting historical sites at your own pace or during cherry blossom season, it is a good idea to set aside half a day.

Points to note
During the cherry blossom season, the area is very crowded, and you may have to wait for the observation deck and parking lot. In winter, the sidewalks can be slippery due to snow and ice, so please bring warm clothes and anti-slip gear. There is a fee to enter the observation deck, and admission may be limited when it is crowded.
