Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kameido Tenjin Shrine, located in Tokyo's Koto Ward, is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane (Tenjin), the god of learning. Since the Edo period, it has been a beloved shrine attracting local worshippers. The shrine is particularly famous for its arched bridge (curved bridge) and pond within the grounds, as well as its seasonal plum blossoms (February to March) and its famous wisteria trellis (late April to early May), making it a popular photo spot. Many visitors pray for passing exams and academic success, and there is a wide selection of votive plaques and amulets available.

Highlights
– Taikobashi (Drum Bridge) and Pond: The vermilion-lacquered arch bridge is the symbol of the temple grounds. The bridge and the scenery reflected on the water make for a great photo.
- Wisteria trellis (Wisteria Festival): The large wisteria trellis is magnificent and is usually at its best from late April to early May, with the wisteria tunnel and dangling tassels being a sight to behold.
– Plum Garden: Plum trees bloom in early spring, making this a great place for a stroll (February to March).
– Ema and amulets for academic success: Many students and their families visit especially during exam season.
– Lanterns and shrine buildings within the grounds: The calm atmosphere makes it a great place for strolling and taking photos.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Approximately 8-10 minutes walk from Kameido Station on the JR Sobu Line.
- Approximately 7-10 minutes walk from Kameido Station on the Tobu Kameido Line (please check the signs as the exit varies depending on the line).
- Transfers from Toei Bus, Tokyo Metro and other lines are convenient, and access from the city center is excellent.
- Bicycles and taxis are also available. Parking is limited in the surrounding area, so we recommend using public transportation when it is crowded.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)
– Regular visit/walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- During the Wisteria Festival and plum blossom season, if you include photography and a stroll around the area, the trip will take about 1-2 hours. However, it may take longer to take photos during busy times.

Nearby spots
– Kameido Gyoza: Popular local restaurants dot the area. Recommended for when you want a light meal.
– Kameido Umeyashiki: A facility with plum blossoms, gardens, and souvenir shops (seasonal events are also held).
- Shopping streets in the Kinshicho and Kameido area: Plenty of places to shop and eat.
- Tokyo Skytree (Oshiage): Within 20-30 minutes by train, it is possible to combine sightseeing with this trip.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: During the peak wisteria season (late April to early May), plum blossom season, and exam season (winter to early spring), many visitors come to the temple, and the grounds and area around the bridge become crowded. Please allow plenty of time for your visit.
- Manners: Shrines are places of worship. Please observe basic manners, such as bowing once in front of the torii gate, purifying yourself at the water basin, and following proper etiquette when worshiping (two bows, two claps, one bow). Photography is permitted in many places, but please be considerate when photographing people worshiping or at festivals. Do not touch the plants or fences within the shrine grounds.
- Safety: The arched bridge is sloped and slippery, so please be especially careful in rainy weather or when it is crowded. If you are with small children, please be considerate and hold their hands.
– What to wear and bring: During the spring viewing season, there can be large temperature differences, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket. Be careful to keep your valuables safe when it's crowded.

Please use the information above as a reference and enjoy the seasonal flowers and traditional events while visiting Kameido Tenjin Shrine. Kameido Tenjin Shrine is a hidden gem near the city center where you can enjoy the history of the area and the seasonal scenery.
