Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi is a large pedestrian-only suspension bridge located in Kokonoe Town, Kusu District, Oita Prefecture. Completed and opened in 2006, it quickly attracted attention for its size and scenery spanning the valley. With a total length of approximately 390m and a height of approximately 173m from the valley floor, it is one of the longest and highest suspension bridges in Japan.

The bridge's distinctive feature is the deep valley and seasonal natural scenery that can be seen from the center of the bridge. The autumn foliage is particularly spectacular, attracting many tourists. The bridge itself was designed as a tourist structure, and you can enjoy a panoramic view along with the thrilling experience of crossing the bridge.

Highlights

  • A magnificent panorama from the bridge: An open view overlooking the valley, forests, and distant mountains.
  • Seasonal Expressions: Enjoy different scenery in each season, from the young leaves of spring, fresh greenery of summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery of winter.
  • Valley and waterfall: The beauty of the surrounding valley and the nearby waterfall (the appearance of which changes depending on the weather and flow rate) are also attractive.
  • Photo spots: Popular photo spots include observation points where you can take panoramic photos of the bridge and from the bridge itself.
  • Walking route: You can enjoy further nature walks by visiting the promenade and observation deck beyond the bridge.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Car: Cars are convenient for sightseeing. The most common routes are from Yufuin or Hita. Access is possible from major roads and expressways (Oita Expressway, Kyushu Cross-Island Expressway, etc.). Parking is available, but it can get crowded during peak seasons, so it's recommended to arrive early.
  • Public transportation: From the nearest train station, you can mainly use buses and taxis. You can also get there by bus or taxi from Yufuin Station or Bungomori Station on the JR Kyudai Main Line, but please note that some lines have limited service, so please check the timetable in advance.
  • Sightseeing bus tours: During the tourist season, sightseeing buses and day trips from Kokonoe and Yufuin are often included in the tour. This is convenient and reduces the worry of parking during traffic jams.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Bridge viewing and crossing only: Approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour (including crossing and taking photos)
  • If you take your time to explore the surrounding area and take in the surrounding facilities: 1.5 to 3 hours
  • Day trips combining nearby hot springs and other tourist attractions: Half a day to a full day

Nearby spots

  • Kyusuikei: A scenic spot where you can enjoy the valley scenery. It is also known as a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves.
  • Kuju Mountain Range (mountains that extend from the outer rim of Mount Aso): An area where you can enjoy mountain climbing and highland driving (pay attention to the season and equipment).
  • Hot springs: There are hot springs in the surrounding area, such as Yufuin and Kokonoe Onsenkyo, making it the perfect place to end your sightseeing trip.
  • Roadside stations and local direct sales outlets: There are facilities scattered around the area that sell local specialties and snacks.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Entrance and usage fees: There may be an entrance fee to use the bridge (approximately a few hundred yen for adults). Please check the official website for the latest fees.
  • Crowds: It gets especially crowded during the autumn foliage season, Golden Week, and weekends. Since you may have to wait for parking and entry, it's best to visit early in the morning or on a weekday.
  • Safety and Weather: The bridge may be closed during strong winds or bad weather. Please be careful when walking on it in winter as it can be slippery when covered in snow or ice.
  • Manners: Please be considerate of other visitors by not running on the bridge, not making noise, and always taking your trash with you. There may be restrictions on bringing pets or bicycles, so please check in advance.
  • Photography/Tripods: When it is crowded, using a tripod may cause inconvenience. Please be considerate of your surroundings when taking photos.
  • Public transport frequency: Some bus routes have limited service. Please check return times and plan accordingly.
