Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Kujuku Islands are an archipelago of approximately 208 islands of various sizes spread along a ria coastline off the west coast of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and are known for their rich natural scenery. The name "Kujuku" means "many," and the actual number of islands exceeds 200. Many of the islands are uninhabited and covered with small trees, formed by erosion from waves and wind. In the morning mist and sunset, the silhouettes of the islands floating on the sea surface are picturesque, and have long attracted sailors, painters, and photographers.
It is now protected as part of the Saikai National Park, and has been developed as a tourist attraction with sightseeing boats, observation points, and marine activities. As it is located near Sasebo Port, it is also attractive because you can enjoy the port town's culture and cuisine (such as Sasebo burgers).
Highlights
- Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort: A tourist hub with a sightseeing boat dock, an aquarium (Kujukushima Aquarium Umi Kirara), restaurants, and souvenir shops. You can tour the islands on the sightseeing boat "Pearl Queen," and the 40-60 minute cruise is popular.
- Tenkaiho: A representative observation deck that offers a panoramic view of the Kujukushima Islands. The panoramic view of the sea and islands is particularly worth seeing at sunset, during the spring rape blossom season, or in the clear autumn air.
- Kujukushima Aquarium Umi Kirara: This aquarium is located inside the Pearl Sea Resort. It is recommended for families as it features exhibits that recreate the local ocean and a ray touch corner.
- Sea kayaking, SUP, fishing: There are activities that allow you to travel between the islands at your own pace, and there are also plans that allow you to land on nearby uninhabited islands and enjoy snorkeling (advance reservations recommended).
- Sunset and morning mist scenery: The fantastic scenery created by the island silhouettes reflected on the sea surface and the morning mist is a famous photo spot. The atmosphere changes greatly depending on the weather.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: JR Sasebo Station (center of Sasebo city).
- public transportation: Take a bus bound for Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort from Sasebo Station or Sasebo Bus Center (takes about 20-30 minutes), or take a taxi for about 10-15 minutes.
- car: Use the Nishi Kyushu Expressway or public roads. Parking is available at Pearl Sea Resort and Tenkaiho (paid and free parking available).
- From afar: About an hour by JR or car from Nagasaki City, and about 1.5 to 2 hours by train, express bus or car from Fukuoka (Hakata) (transportation means and time vary depending on the flight, so it is recommended to check in advance).
- Sightseeing boat departure and arrival: Departs from the pier of Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort. Cruise departure and arrival times and frequency vary depending on the season and weather, so please check the official website.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Sightseeing boat cruise: 40-60 minutes
- Viewing at Tenkaiho: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including photography and strolling)
- Half-day course including Pearl Sea Resort (Aquarium and Lunch): 3-4 hours
- If you want to enjoy a cruise, sea kayaking, and other activities, plus sightseeing in the surrounding area, the one-day plan is 6 to 8 hours.

- Huis Ten Bosch: European-style theme park (approximately 30-40 minutes by car, local bus available)
- Mikawachi ware: A ceramics production area close to Arita and Hasami. You can visit the pottery museum and kilns (it's convenient to travel by car).
- Mifuneyama Paradise: A garden that changes with the seasons (night illumination is popular).
- Sasebo City (Sasebo Burger): Enjoy gourmet food and shopping in the port town, stroll around Sasebo Port, etc.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Busy period: Observation areas and sightseeing boats tend to be crowded in the evenings during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage and cherry blossom season, and on long weekends. To avoid crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays or in the early morning or evening hours.
- Weather and Operation: Cruise ships and marine activities may be canceled or suspended due to weather conditions at sea. Be especially careful during the winter monsoon and typhoon seasons. Please check the operation status before departing.
- Clothes/preparation: The sea breeze can be strong and cold, so it's a good idea to bring some light windproof clothing. Protect yourself from the sun in summer and the cold in winter. When participating in sea activities, be sure to bring some clothes you don't mind getting wet, a change of clothes, and a wet bag.
- Nature Conservation and Manners: Collecting living creatures and dumping trash on uninhabited islands is prohibited. Please follow local rules, such as not entering restricted areas or private property, and not feeding wildlife.
- safety: Watch your step at the cliff edge of the observation point. When using a sightseeing boat or kayak, please wear a life jacket and follow the instructor's instructions.

You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kujukushima even for a short time, but you can enjoy it more comfortably if you plan your trip with ample time, taking into consideration the sea, weather, and nature conservation.
