Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kudaka Island is a small island off the coast of Nanjo City in the southern part of Okinawa's main island, and is known as the "Island of the Gods," deeply connected to the creation myths of the Ryukyu Kingdom and ancient Ryukyu beliefs. Since ancient times, the island has been a place of rituals and departures, and the island is dotted with sacred sites and places of worship known as uganju. The natural landscape is characterized by untouched sandy beaches, coral reefs, and virgin forests, as well as the quiet sea and sacred atmosphere. As it has not become a tourist destination, you can enjoy a relaxing time and experience the Ryukyu beliefs.

Highlights

  • Sacred sites and places of worship (Uganju): Places of prayer located throughout the island. Please be quiet when visiting, and be aware of restrictions on photography and entry.
  • Beautiful ocean and sandy beaches: Clear ocean and white sand beaches are scattered throughout the area. There are also spots where you can enjoy swimming and snorkeling (swimming permission varies depending on the season and location).
  • Walking trails and village scenery: Enjoy a stroll through the traditional Ryukyu houses, fields, and relaxed village atmosphere.
  • Island rituals and traditions: On days when annual events and rituals are held, unique rituals can be observed (please be considerate when viewing).
  • Ocean view points: The views from the cape and natural observation points are beautiful, and there are many photo spots.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

To get to Kudaka Island, travel by car or bus to the port on the main island (Azama Port, near Nanjo City), and then take a ferry (regular ferry) from there.

  • Nearest major transportation hub: Naha Airport (there are no trains on the main island of Okinawa, so transportation is mainly by bus, taxi, or rental car).
  • Approximate travel time from Naha: Approximately 40-60 minutes by car or taxi (depending on traffic conditions). Approximately 1 hour by public bus.
  • Ferry: Regular ferry bound for Kudaka Island from Azama Port and other locations takes about 15 minutes (few services). Please check the departure time and operation status in advance.
  • Note: Ferries may be canceled due to weather (especially typhoons and storms), so be sure to check the round-trip operating status and plan your trip with plenty of time.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: Half a day to a full day, including round-trip travel time (actual stay is estimated at 3 to 5 hours, including time to stroll around the island and relax on the beach).
  • Relaxed sightseeing and experiences: If you want to stay overnight and enjoy island time, we recommend a two-day, one-night stay. There are a few guesthouses and simple accommodations available.
  • If you walk around the island: It depends on the route, but it will take about 2 hours (please plan with plenty of time to include strolling and visiting shrines).

Nearby spots

  • Nanjo City (main island side): Ryukyu sacred sites such as Sefa Utaki, the coastline and observation spots in the Nanjo City area.
  • Cape Chinen Park: A viewing spot overlooking Kudaka Island, it's a convenient place to stop by on a road trip.
  • Southern beaches and cultural facilities: There are a variety of tourist spots scattered along the way back from the island towards Naha.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Respect for sacred places: Kudaka Island is a place of faith. There are often restrictions on entry and photography is prohibited at places of worship and religious ceremonies, so please follow local instructions and act quietly.
  • Garbage/Bringing in: Resources and facilities on the island are limited. Please take your trash with you and limit the amount of disposable items you bring with you.
  • Prepare food, drink, and water: There are few restaurants and shops in the village, so it is a good idea to prepare water, snacks, and cash in advance.
  • Transportation and Operation Status: Ferry services are infrequent and prone to cancellation due to weather. Plan well in advance to avoid missing your return trip. Be especially careful during typhoon season (summer to autumn).
  • Clothing and equipment: The sun is strong, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and drinking water. Non-slip shoes are useful when walking on rocky or rugged areas.
  • Crowds: As it is not a major tourist destination, it is not very crowded, but the number of tourists and worshippers may increase during festivals, weekends, and holidays.

Finally, Kudaka Island is a quiet island where nature and faith live on. When visiting, please be respectful of the local culture and customs, and enjoy the island's atmosphere in peace and quiet. We recommend checking the Nanjo City tourism website or port information in advance for the latest ferry schedules and information on the island.
