Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Lake Chuzenji is a highland lake in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, located at an altitude of approximately 1,269m. It is a caldera lake that was formed approximately 20,000 years ago when volcanic activity caused ejecta from Mount Nantai to dam up a valley. It has an area of approximately 11.6km² and a maximum depth of approximately 163m. There has long been a temple called Chuzenji on the lakeside, and it has developed as a place where faith and natural scenery coexist in harmony.
Each season has its own charm, and in particular in autumn when the foliage changes color, the surrounding mountains are reflected on the lake's surface, attracting many tourists as one of Japan's most scenic spots. In summer, it's a cool summer resort, and in winter, you can enjoy the snowy scenery and ice fishing for smelt. Other highlights include the waterfall (Kegon Falls) that flows from the lake, and the views from the surrounding walking paths and observation decks.
