Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Yonaha Maehama is a representative beach in Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, characterized by its long stretch of pure white coral sand and crystal clear emerald blue waters. The beach stretches for several kilometers, and its shallow, calm waters make it ideal for strolling and playing in the water. It is also known as a popular spot for tourist and wedding photography, and the contrast of colors on clear days is one of the most iconic scenes of "Japan's white sand and green pines." Historically, this coastline has been closely linked to the local fishing industry and lifestyle, but in recent years it has been developed as a tourist resource.

Highlights

  • Take a leisurely stroll along the long white sand beach: The scale of the beach and the gradation of the ocean colors from near to far are beautiful.
  • Snorkeling and SUP in the crystal clear waters: There are places where you can enjoy shallow water fish and sand ripples on the seabed (the spots change depending on the conditions of the day).
  • Sunset and sunrise views: The colors of the sky and sea at sunset are especially popular and perfect for photography.
  • Appealing as a photo spot: There are many locations for bride and groom photoshoots and Instagrammable spots.
  • Water sports and sand play: There are plenty of beach activities available in the summer (rentals and tours available).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train: There are no train lines on either the main island of Okinawa or the outlying islands, so there are no nearby train stations.
  • Air: The nearest airport is Miyako Airport (there are also flights to Shimojishima Airport). It is convenient to travel from the airport by car.
  • Car/Rental Car: The most convenient way to travel is by rental car. It usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport or city center, depending on road conditions (this may vary depending on the departure point and traffic conditions).
  • Bus: There are local bus services, but they are not frequent and there are restrictions on the number of services and time slots, so it is recommended to check in advance.
  • Taxis and sightseeing tours: You can also stop by by taxi or on a half-day or full-day sightseeing tour.
  • Parking: There is a parking lot near the main entrance (some are free and some are paid). It is recommended to arrive early during times when the lot tends to fill up.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short stop: 30 minutes to 1 hour (photography and strolling around the scenery)
  • Swimming and snorkeling: 2-4 hours (including changing clothes and breaks)
  • A relaxing day: All day (picnic, reading, watching the sunset, etc.)

Nearby spots

  • Kurima Island (Kurima Bridge and Kurima Island Beach): A scenic spot on the remote island that can be reached in a short drive. The drive and the view are recommended.
  • Irabu Island (Irabu Bridge): The Irabu Island and Shimoji Island area can be reached by crossing a long bridge, where you can enjoy driving and strolling along the coast.
  • Sunayama Beach, Painagama Beach, etc.: Visiting these beaches in addition to other popular beaches on Miyako Island will make your island tour even more enjoyable.
  • Restaurants and souvenir shops in the Hirara area: Convenient for eating and shopping after the beach.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets very crowded during the summer high season (July to August) and on holidays and weekends. Parking lots and popular spots can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early in the morning or in the evening.
  • Lifeguards and Swimming Restrictions: Lifeguards may be stationed seasonally. Please be sure to check local notices and instructions from staff regarding swimming restrictions and ocean conditions.
  • Dangers at sea: As tidal currents and rip currents may occur, avoid traveling alone and refrain from entering the water when the sea conditions are poor. Be careful in the summer as there may be jellyfish.
  • Protect the natural environment: Please observe etiquette, such as not damaging the coral or other living creatures, not taking any coral home, and always taking your trash with you. Be careful not to step on the coral with your fins or feet.
  • Drones/Photography: There are rules for flying drones. Please be sure to follow the necessary procedures and check the prohibited areas to avoid causing inconvenience to local residents and other users.
  • Typhoon season: Weather and sea conditions change suddenly during typhoon season (usually from summer to autumn). Please check weather and transportation information before traveling.
  • Sun protection and drinking water: The sun is strong, so be sure to wear a hat, sunscreen, and drink plenty of water. There is little shade in many areas, so it is useful to have a parasol or simple shade ready.

Yonaha Maehama is a place where you can easily enjoy the scenery that represents Miyako Island. If you have time, try visiting the nearby outlying islands and other beaches to fully enjoy the charm of the sea and islands.
