Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Ueno Toshogu Shrine is one of the Toshogu shrines built during the Edo period, and is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (Tosho Daigongen). Located in a corner of Ueno Park (Ueno Park), it is characterized by the remnants of gorgeous late Edo-period shrine architecture, intricate carvings, and colorful decorations. The quiet shrine grounds in the city are not only valuable as a cultural asset, but also have a calm atmosphere that blends in with the scenery throughout the seasons, attracting worshippers and visitors from both Japan and abroad.

Highlights

  • Shrine architecture and decoration: The shrine building, decorated with lacquer, gold leaf, and carvings (detailed dragons, lions, etc.), exudes the decorative beauty of the Edo period.
  • Stone lanterns seen everywhere: Large stone lanterns donated by feudal lords and people from all over the area are lined up, evoking the bustle of the area in the past.
  • Atmosphere of the temple grounds: Surrounded by the greenery of Ueno Park, the temple is particularly picturesque during the cherry blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage season in autumn. Another attractive feature is the quietness of the place.
  • Seasonal events: Traditional events such as festivals and ceremonies are sometimes held (please check as the dates and contents vary from year to year).
