Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

The Miike Coal Mine Manda Pit is a coal mine relic from the Meiji to Showa periods in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is an industrial heritage site with well-preserved brick pithead buildings, shaft towers (head frames), boiler rooms, and other structures. In 2015, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution," and is an important spot conveying the history of modern Japan's coal industry and industrialization. The red brick and cast iron details and the stately industrial architecture make for photogenic sites, making it highly appealing not only to fans of factory ruins, but also to history and architecture buffs.

  • Visitor restrictions: For preservation and safety reasons, there are restricted areas and designated viewing routes. Please follow the signs and instructions of staff.
  • Clothing and shoes: Since you will be walking outdoors and in unstable areas, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothing that is easy to move in.
