TOC

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sandankyo is a gorge formed in the upper reaches of the Ota River, which flows through Akiota Town, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is a scenic spot that is attractive for its natural beauty, with deep, steep rock walls, clear streams, large and small waterfalls, and a succession of strangely shaped rock formations. The name is said to come from the legend of the "Sandan" waterfall, and it has long been a popular scenic spot. Some sections have been designated as national scenic spots and natural monuments, and the scenery that changes with the seasons attracts tourists and hikers. The fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing feeling of summer, and the colorful leaves of autumn are particularly spectacular, making it a popular nature spot for day trips from the city.

Highlights

  • Beautiful valley: The views from the walking trail along the steep rock walls, deep pools, and streams are spectacular.
  • Waterfalls and pools: There are many places where the flow forms steps and small waterfalls are scattered throughout, creating a variety of different water features.
  • Strange rock formations and cliffs: The unique rock faces, caves, and narrow canyons created by years of erosion are impressive.
  • Scenery of the four seasons: young leaves in spring, coolness in summer, autumn leaves, and snowy scenery in winter - each season offers a different beauty.
  • Bird and plant observation: You may encounter vegetation and wildlife unique to the valley (please observe quietly).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Sandankyo is a valley in the mountains, so public transportation is limited. Below are the most common ways to get there.

  • By car: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from central Hiroshima via national and prefectural roads. Parking is available near the entrance. It can get crowded in the summer and other tourist seasons, so it's recommended to arrive early.
  • Public transportation: The most common route is to take the nearest JR line (such as the Geibi Line) to a station in the mountains, and then take a local bus or taxi to the entrance to Sandankyo Gorge. Local buses run infrequently, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.
  • Sightseeing bus tours: On weekends and during peak tourist seasons, there are day trips departing from Hiroshima. If public transportation is inconvenient, using a tour is a convenient option.

*Please check the Akiota Town Tourism Association or official information before visiting for exact times, bus routes, and parking information.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • A quick stroll: It takes about 1-2 hours round trip from the trailhead to the observation deck.
  • A leisurely tour of the main sights: 2-4 hours (half a day) including photo opportunities and breaks.
  • Serious walks including trekking: Depending on the course, it may take a whole day.

Nearby spots

  • Mt. Osorakan: A mountain area (nearby) where you can enjoy mountain climbing, highland walks in the summer, and skiing in the winter.
  • Hot spring facilities: There are hot springs and inns in the area where you can take a day trip to bathe, which you can use after hiking (for example, around Togouchi).
  • Roadside stations and local tourist facilities: These are convenient bases for gathering information at places to eat and buy local specialties.
  • Other scenic valleys, such as Taishaku Gorge: There are other attractions within driving distance.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Public Transportation: Buses and trains run infrequently, so be sure to check the timetable in advance. If you miss the return trip, you'll have to wait a long time.
  • Watch your step: The trails in the valley can be wet and slippery in places, and there are steps. Wear trekking shoes or shoes with sturdy soles.
  • Weather and rising water levels: It is dangerous when it rains or when the water level rises. Flooded streams are extremely dangerous, so do not attempt to cross or swim in them.
  • Summer heat and insects: As summer heat increases, so do bring along drinks, insect repellent, a hat, etc.
  • Winter closures and snow accumulation: In winter, road closures and dangerous areas may occur due to snow and ice. If you are visiting in winter, be sure to bring the appropriate equipment and check the information.
  • Environmental protection and etiquette: In order to protect the natural environment, please be sure to take any trash with you, do not damage plants or rocks, do not feed the animals or plants, and observe the area quietly.
  • No cell phone signal: There are places in the mountains where cell phone reception is poor. It is a good idea to decide on an emergency contact method and a meeting place for your companions.
  • Drone use: Drone flying may be restricted due to considerations of protecting the landscape and other visitors. Please check the rules before use.

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the latest traffic information, traffic conditions, and event information on Akiota Town's official tourism website or at the tourist information center. Please be sure to enjoy the beauty of the valley in all four seasons while taking safety into consideration.
