Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mitsumine Shrine is an ancient mountain worship shrine located in Chichibu City (Chichibu County), Saitama Prefecture, in a place surrounded by the deep forests and spiritual aura of Okuchichibu. Old legends remain about its founding, and it has been a center of worship for mountain gods and nature spirits since ancient times. A particularly notable feature is the worship of wolves (O-Inusama) as messengers and guardians of the gods, and many wolf statues and offerings can be seen within the shrine grounds.

Located in the mountains at a high altitude, the majestic shrine and the surrounding natural scenery (deep forests, fog, and the changing seasons) attract visitors. In addition, many worshippers visit the shrine as a miraculous power spot, and the unique amulets (kimori) and limited edition amulets and goshuin (temple seals) are also popular.

Highlights

  • Worship hall and main hall: A majestic shrine nestled in the mountains. The imposing wooden structure and carvings are worth seeing.
  • Wolf statues (Oinusama): Wolf statues and offerings are placed throughout the temple grounds. Wolves are the symbol of this shrine and are loved as guardian deities.
  • Zuishinmon Gate and Approach: The stone steps, moss-covered approach, and the pilgrimage route surrounded by forest create a tranquil and atmospheric atmosphere.
  • Worship site and view: Depending on the weather, you can enjoy the view of the Chichibu mountains and deep valleys. The morning mist and autumn leaves are especially beautiful.
  • Amulets (Kimori): Mitsumine Shrine is famous for its amulets that pray for the protection of Ki (energy). The white "Kimori" charms that are distributed only at the beginning of each month are often a hot topic (distribution methods vary depending on the time of year).
  • Nearby nature walks and hiking routes: There are hiking trails around Mt. Mitake, and you can enjoy everything from short walks to day hikes.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Mitakeguchi Station (Chichibu Railway) - Buses are available for visiting the shrine.
  • Train + Bus: Approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour by bus from Mitsumineguchi Station (we recommend checking the timetable as there are few buses). There may also be seasonal buses and local buses from Seibu Chichibu Station and Chichibu Station.
  • By car: Accessible via the Kan'etsu Expressway Hanazono IC or the Shomaru Tunnel. It takes about 40-60 minutes by car from central Chichibu, and about 2-3 hours from Tokyo (Ikebukuro), depending on traffic conditions. Please drive carefully as the mountain road is narrow and has many curves. There is a parking lot, but it may be full at busy times (fees may apply).
  • Please note: Local buses run infrequently, and may be reduced or canceled especially in the early morning and evening, and during the winter, so please check the timetables and official websites of each bus company and Chichibu Railway in advance.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Worship only: Approximately 1 hour (worship, strolling around the grounds, purchasing amulets, etc.)
  • Slow worship + photography + waiting for the temple seal: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Including hiking and exploring the surrounding area: 3-5 hours (depending on the course)
  • Transportation: Please plan your trip with ample time to spare, taking into account waiting times for buses and crowded parking lots.

Nearby spots

  • Chichibu Shrine (Chichibu city center) — A historic shrine in the city center (approximately 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic).
  • Hitsujiyama Park (Moss Phlox Hill) - Famous for its spring moss phlox (Chichibu City).
  • Nagatoro — A scenic spot for rafting, boating, and rock formations (about 40-60 minutes by car).
  • Hot spring facilities and roadside stations around Mitakeguchi - Can be used as a base for sightseeing in the Chichibu area.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The parking lot becomes especially crowded with visitors on weekends, holidays, the autumn foliage season, spring sightseeing season, and limited distribution days for kimori. As the number of buses will be increased only to a limited extent, we recommend that you leave and return early.
  • Winter weather: As the area is at a high altitude, snow and frozen roads can occur in winter. Please prepare chains and winter tires, and avoid driving early in the morning or at night. Roads may be closed in some cases.
  • Clothing and footwear: The approach to the shrine has stone steps and unpaved sections, so comfortable shoes are necessary. The weather in the mountains can change quickly, so please bring a jacket.
  • Worship Manners: The shrine grounds are sacred grounds. Please observe basic worship manners, such as not speaking loudly, remaining quiet during religious ceremonies and festivals, and not taking photos in prohibited areas.
  • Amulets and red seals: Popular items may be sold out early. Please allow plenty of time as there may be waiting times at the red seal and gift shop when it is crowded.
  • Nature Conservation: Please take care to protect the natural environment by taking your trash home with you and prohibiting fires except in designated areas.

Before visiting, please check the official website of Mitsumine Shrine and the traffic information for the Chichibu area to make sure you have the latest information on weather, bus schedules, and parking. Enjoy your visit surrounded by beautiful nature and a solemn atmosphere.
