Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Mount Mihara is a stratovolcano located on Izu Oshima (Oshima Town, Tokyo) with an elevation of approximately 758m, and is the island's symbol. The dynamic topography, unique to an isolated volcanic island floating in the sea, is an attractive feature, and visitors can enjoy the size of the crater, traces of lava flows, and a 360-degree panoramic view from the summit (on a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay, and the Izu Islands). As an active volcano that has erupted repeatedly since ancient times, the fact that traces of volcanic activity can be seen up close is also of interest from both an academic and tourist perspective.
Highlights
- Summit crater (circling the crater)The highlight of Mt. Mihara is the "Ohachi Meguri" tour around the crater rim. You can see the impressive scenery of the crater and large and small volcanic rocks and lava scars up close. The required time depends on the course, but the shortest route takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
- Crater Observation Deck/ViewpointThere are several observation points on the summit, from which you can see Mount Fuji, the Izu Islands, and the Boso Peninsula on a clear day. The morning and evening light makes the view even more impressive.
- Lava flows and rough terrain: You can see the landscape of lava and sediments, including traces of activity since the 1980s (the age may vary), and experience the dynamism of volcanic activity.
- Flora and seasonal flowers: Camellias and other plants unique to the island can be seen at the foot of the mountain and along the hiking trails. Camellia season (winter to early spring) is especially popular among tourists.
- Photo SpotThere are many photogenic spots, such as views across the crater, lava plateaus, and cliffs.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
*Izu Oshima is connected to the mainland by sea and air. Below are some of the most common ways to get there.
- Air (Chofu Airport → Oshima Airport): There are regular scheduled flights, and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Please check the flight status in advance as it is easily affected by the weather.
- Ship (Tokyo area): High-speed ferries (jet boats) and large passenger ships depart from Takeshiba Pier and other ports. High-speed ferries generally take about 1.5 to 2 hours, while large ships generally take more than 3 hours (this may vary depending on the service and season).
- Traveling around the islandAfter arriving at Oshima, take a local bus (such as Oshima Tokai Bus) or sightseeing bus from Motomachi Port or Okada Port, or a taxi to the Miharayama trailhead (near the Miharayama Visitor Center). Please check the timetable as there are limited bus services. The journey takes approximately 30 to 50 minutes from the port.
- Walking and mountain climbing:It takes about 60 to 90 minutes for experienced hikers to reach the summit from the trailhead, but it may take longer if you walk slowly. Please plan accordingly based on your physical strength and the weather.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Crater view and crater tour only: 30 minutes to 1.5 hours
- Round trip from the trailhead to the summit: 2-4 hours (varies depending on walking speed and break times)
- Day trip plan including transportation from the port and sightseeing in the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (depending on ferry/flight arrival and departure times)
Nearby spots
- Oshima Park (Camellia Garden): A park where you can enjoy island plants and camellias. It is especially crowded during the Camellia Festival.
- Urasabaku (Back Desert): A desert-like volcanic ash area with a unique landscape. There are also tours available in four-wheel drive vehicles.
- Habuko Port: This area retains the atmosphere of the old town and port, and is recommended for strolling and photography.
- Oshima Hot Springs and Bathing Facilities: You can soothe your fatigue at the hot springs and public baths on the island (please check opening times in advance).
Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Check volcanic disaster prevention information: Mt. Mihara is an active volcano. Volcanic alert levels and mountain access restrictions may be in place. Be sure to check the latest information from the Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and Oshima Town before setting off. Do not enter the area during restrictions.
- Mountaineering equipment: Be sure to bring trekking shoes (non-slip shoes), warm clothing, rain gear, water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen. The wind can be strong and cold near the summit.
- Walk along the road and follow the no-trespassing rules: There is a risk of collapse and falling rocks around the crater. Never enter restricted areas.
- Garbage and Nature Conservation Manners: Always take your trash with you and avoid damaging plants and the terrain.
- When crowded: On weekends, consecutive holidays, and during camellia season, the number of tourists increases, and parking lots and buses become crowded. Please plan your itinerary so that you have ample time to plan your trip and arrive at the port or bus stop.
- Weather changes:The weather on the island is changeable, and visibility can be poor due to fog or clouds. If visibility is poor, do not push yourself and turn back.
- Use of drones, etc.: There may be restrictions in place for reasons of nature conservation or safety. Please check the rules in advance and refrain from flying in areas where permission is required.
Mt. Mihara is a tourist attraction where you can enjoy the power of the volcano and the island scenery in a short amount of time.
