Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Sannai-Maruyama Site is the remains of a large Jomon period settlement in Aomori City. The site is the remains of a settlement that was built from the middle to late Jomon period, and includes a wide range of pit dwellings, mounded earth, large post-hole buildings, and grave pits. Characterized by the abundance of excavated pottery, stone tools, bone and horn implements, and ornaments, as well as the well-preserved state of the remains, it is one of Japan's leading sites for learning about Jomon culture. Designated a National Special Historic Site, the site allows visitors to experience life at the time through reconstructed dwellings and exhibition facilities.

Highlights

  • Reconstructed settlements (pit dwellings and large post-hole buildings): You can view the life-size reconstructions of the buildings from both the exterior and interior, and get a real sense of the scale of the structures and lifestyles there.
  • Preservation status of the excavation site: There are sections that have been preserved and maintained in the same state as when they were excavated, allowing you to see the layout and deposition of the remains.
  • Exhibition of excavated items: Excavated Jomon pottery, stone tools, decorative items, etc. are on display, allowing visitors to see in detail the production techniques and decorative designs (exhibition hall and permanent exhibits).
  • Walking paths and viewing spots: You can enjoy the scale of the ruins and the surrounding nature while walking along the paths that have been developed as an archaeological park.
  • Educational Programs and Events: Seasonal special exhibitions and hands-on events (such as magatama making and introductions to Jomon cuisine) are sometimes held. It is a good idea to check the schedule before visiting.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus: The nearest public transportation hub is JR Aomori Station, from which you can take local buses and tourist buses (travel times vary depending on the route and traffic conditions, so be sure to check the latest timetable).
  • Taxi: Approximately 10 to 20 minutes by taxi from Aomori Station (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Private car/rental car: There is a parking lot for visitors at the ruins park. It is about 30-40 minutes by car from Aomori Airport (depending on traffic conditions).
  • Bicycles: The surrounding area is relatively flat, making it a good place to take a sightseeing tour on a rental bicycle.
  • Note: Bus routes and frequency may vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check the official website or public transport timetable in advance.
