Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Bandai Bridge is a representative bridge over the Shinano River that flows through Chuo Ward, Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, and is one of the city's landmarks. Built in the Meiji and Taisho periods and undergoing numerous renovations, the current bridge features a modern arch structure and is characterized by its beautiful appearance that blends in with the cityscape. The illuminated bridge reflected on the river surface and the view of the surrounding city and sea (the Sea of Japan) are attractive, making it a popular photo spot.

Highlights

  • View from the bridge: The view from the bridge is captivating, with a panoramic view of the Shinano River, the Furumachi and Bandai areas on the opposite bank, and the ocean in the distance. It is especially beautiful at sunset and sunrise.
  • Night view and illumination: The arches and railings of the bridge are illuminated at night, creating a photogenic scene when combined with the light reflected on the river surface.
  • Photo spots: You can take a variety of photos by combining the arch shape of the bridge itself, the design of the railings, and the promenade and benches along the river.
  • Vibrant surroundings: There are commercial facilities, cafes, and walking paths around the bridge, making it a great place to take a stroll or take a break.
  • Seasonal scenery: Enjoy different views with each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, evening scenery in autumn, and the silence of winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Niigata Station (JR), about a 10-20 minute walk. Exit the station from the Bandai Exit (east side) and head towards Bandai City.
  • Bus: Bus stops around Bandaibashi and Bandai City are convenient for city buses. Many routes depart from Niigata Station.
  • By car: There are paid parking lots in the area (such as the Bandai City parking lot), but they can get crowded on weekends, holidays, and during events. Parking is prohibited on the streets around the bridge.
  • Walking and cycling: Easily accessible from the city center, it's a great route for walking and cycling. Please be careful when cycling, as you should not get in the way of pedestrians.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area gets crowded during the summer "Niigata Festival" and fireworks displays, as well as in the evenings and nights on weekends. Please be considerate of other pedestrians and tourists when taking photos or walking.
  • Safety: Please be aware of pedestrians and cyclists on the bridge, so if you stop to take photos, please be aware of those following you. It is also dangerous to lean over the railings or climb over the fence.
  • Weather/season: In winter, be careful of frozen roads and strong winds. Visibility is reduced on days with strong sea breezes or in stormy weather.
  • Manners: Please take your trash with you. Please refrain from occupying the area for long periods of time at night or playing loud conversations or music, as this will disturb others.
  • Parking: Please use the surrounding parking lots and avoid parking on the street. Traffic restrictions may be in place during events.
