Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery is one of Nikka Whisky's (formerly known as "whisky") flagship distilleries, located in a deep valley in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Founder Masataka Taketsuru established it in 1969 with the aim of producing a softer, more elegant malt, following on from his Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido. The rich natural environment, clear water, and seasonal changes influence the flavor of the raw spirit, resulting in a whiskey with a fruity, delicate aroma reminiscent of Speyside whiskey.

Its distinctive features include a cool climate that takes advantage of the valley, a pot still that carefully distills in small batches, and a diverse lineup of raw spirits produced in an aging warehouse (using a variety of barrels, including sherry casks and bourbon barrels). The buildings and grounds are also open for tours, allowing visitors to enjoy both the impressive facilities and natural scenery unique to a distillery.
