Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum is an experiential facility with a drift ice theme located in Abashiri, Hokkaido. In addition to exhibits on the formation of drift ice and the nature and creatures of the Sea of Okhotsk, a major feature of the museum is that you can experience touching actual drift ice up close in a frozen facility. The museum's appeal lies in the fact that you can experience the "world of ice" in a simulated way even outside of drift ice season, so you can learn about the mysteries of drift ice no matter the season.
Highlights
- Drift ice experience room (frozen exhibition room): In the exhibition room, which is kept at approximately -15°C, you can actually touch the drift ice and experience the unique sounds and feel of drift ice. It is popular with tourists because you can experience the real cold in a short amount of time.
- Exhibition CornerThere are panels, models, and video exhibits about the process of drift ice formation, the relationship between drift ice and the ecosystem, and the creatures that live on drift ice (such as seals and Steller's sea eagles).
- Video Theater and Commentary: There are videos and explanations that introduce the movement of drift ice and seasonal changes, allowing you to deepen your understanding visually.
- Observation Spots: There may be places where you can view the Sea of Okhotsk and the drifting ice from outdoors or from observation spaces (depending on the season and conditions).
- Photo spot: The frozen exhibition room and in front of the exhibits are great photo spots. You can take commemorative photos with the drifting ice (please be careful to prevent condensation when taking photos inside the frozen room).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: During the drift ice season (roughly January to March), the number of tourists increases, and the facilities and surrounding sightseeing boats become crowded. Weekends and holidays are especially busy, so we recommend visiting and making reservations well in advance.
- Cold weather measures:The temperature in the freezing exhibition room is extremely low. Even if you will only be inside for a short time, the temperature difference when entering and exiting the room may make you feel unwell, so please prepare basic cold weather gear such as a jacket and socks. Please be aware that condensation easily forms on the lenses of your camera or smartphone.
- Safety precautions: Do not attempt to collect drift ice without permission or approach drift ice in dangerous locations. It is extremely dangerous to be on the sea or on the ice. When observing or experiencing, be sure to follow the instructions of the staff.
- MannersPlease observe the exhibits and explanatory panels quietly and be considerate of other visitors and staff. If there are rules prohibiting eating, drinking, or smoking within the facility, please follow them.
- Advance confirmation: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, and availability of special exhibitions and experience programs may vary depending on the season. Please check the official website or facility for the latest information before visiting.
(Note) The best season to view drift ice is winter, but the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum allows you to learn about the mechanisms of drift ice all year round, so it can be enjoyed in any season. Combining your visit with sightseeing in the surrounding area will make for a fulfilling trip.
