Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Lake Utonai (Tomakomai, Hokkaido) is a brackish water lake and wetland in southern Hokkaido, known as an important stopover and wintering site for migratory birds in Hokkaido. The surrounding wetlands and reed beds support rich biodiversity, and many waterfowl and wild birds can be observed throughout the seasons. Conservation activities are being carried out by local residents, local governments, and nature conservation groups, and nature observation trails and bird watching facilities (observation halls) have been developed, making it an attractive place to easily enjoy bird watching and nature walks.
Highlights
- Bird watching: Whooper swans, various ducks, and a wide variety of migratory birds can be seen during the winter, spring, and autumn migration seasons. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to observe birds as they are most active.
- Observation Hall and Exhibition: There are exhibits introducing the nature and ecosystem of Lake Utonai, as well as facilities with observation windows where you can observe the lake surface with binoculars and telescopes. You can learn through explanatory panels and staff guidance.
- Nature observation trails and boardwalks: Walking trails are maintained around reed beds and wetlands, where you can enjoy seasonal plants and insects. Most of the trails are relatively easy to walk.
- Photo spots: There are many spots where you can get up close to wild birds with the vast lake surface and reed beds in the background. The swans and birds are particularly spectacular in winter when migration is at its peak.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Consideration for wild birds: Please observe birds and other wildlife from a distance to avoid disturbing them. Flash photography, loud voices and getting too close are strictly prohibited.

- Obeying routes and restricted areas: Use designated observation paths and decks and do not enter restricted areas. These are conservation rules.
- Clothing and equipment for each season: It gets very cold in winter, so you'll need to take measures to protect yourself from the cold. In spring and autumn, it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings, so bring a jacket. Bring boots or comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and telephoto lenses to ensure a comfortable observation experience.
- Crowds: The number of visitors increases during peak migration times (spring and autumn) and the swans' wintering season. If you want to avoid crowds, consider visiting on a weekday or early in the morning.
- Garbage and environmental considerations: Please be sure to take your trash with you and avoid polluting the natural environment.
- Bringing drones, etc.: Flying drones without permission is often prohibited, so please check beforehand before bringing or flying them.
