Ameya Yokocho (commonly known as Ameyoko) is a shopping street stretching along the underpass between JR Okachimachi Station and JR Ueno Station, and is a typical downtown market that developed from its origins as a postwar black market. There are various theories about the origin of the name, but it is said to come from the large number of candy shops there, or from the distribution of surplus candy from the US military after the war. With a wide selection of products including clothing, shoes, cosmetics, dried goods, fresh fish, prepared foods, and snacks, the lively conversation and bargaining can be enjoyed. It is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, where you can casually stroll around and shop while eating and walking.
