Fumotopara (Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture) is a vast grassland and campground at the southwestern foot of Mount Fuji, with its greatest attraction being the sweeping views of the mountain. Originally an open area utilizing farmland and pastures, in recent years, coupled with the camping boom, it has become a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad. With few obstructions to the view, it is a unique spot to enjoy sunrises, sunsets, starry skies, and the changing seasonal faces of Mount Fuji. As a managed campground with easy-to-use facilities including auto-camping, free sites, toilets, and showers, it is also popular as a venue for photography (especially stargazing and Mount Fuji) and outdoor events.

- Mount Fuji view: The view of Mount Fuji over the grassland is breathtaking. It is especially beautiful in the early morning or evening on clear days.
- Starry sky and the Milky Way: There is little light pollution, making it ideal for astronomical photography. The sky is very clear from winter to early spring.
- Vast grassland: A spacious layout allows you to freely arrange tents and tarps (sections and free sites available).
- Photo spot: The scenery is picturesque no matter where you look, making it popular with photography enthusiasts.
- Activities: In addition to camping, you can enjoy outdoor activities such as picnics, walks, and bonfires (within regulations).
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Fujinomiya Station on the JR Minobu Line is the closest major station. From the station, it is common to take a taxi or local bus (services vary depending on the season and day of the week, so please check), or rent a car.
- Access by car: Approximately 30-60 minutes (depending on the starting point) via national and prefectural roads from the Tomei Expressway, Shin-Tomei Expressway, and Tomei Expressway interchanges (Fuji IC, Shin-Fuji IC, Fujikawa Smart IC, etc.). Parking is available on-site (though you may have to wait for a parking space during peak hours).
- Buses/Shuttles: Special shuttles and tourist buses may operate during peak season and holidays, so please check the official website and local transport information in advance.
- Taxi: Approximately 30 minutes by taxi from Fujinomiya Station or Shin-Fuji Station (depending on road conditions).
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Day trip: 1-3 hours (viewing Mt. Fuji, strolling, photography, etc.)
- Camping stay: 2 days and 1 night to 3 days and 2 nights is the norm. If you want to enjoy the mornings and evenings, starry skies, and sunrises, we recommend staying for 2 nights or more.
- Photo tour: Depending on the photography plan, a long stay, including night and early morning, is recommended.
Nearby spots
- Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine (Fujinomiya City): A historic shrine and a place of worship. There are also many famous Fujinomiya yakisoba restaurants nearby.
- Shiraito Falls (approximately 20-30 minutes by car): A famous waterfall with a beautiful drop and spray.
- Lake Tanuki (approximately 20 minutes by car): Enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji across the lake, nature walks, and bird watching.
- Asagiri Plateau: A dairy farming area dotted with ranches, local gourmet restaurants, craft shops, and more.
- Tourist ranches, milk lands, etc.: There are many spots where you can enjoy souvenirs, soft serve ice cream, and other local delicacies.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: It gets very crowded during Golden Week, summer vacation, autumn foliage season, and weekends. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.
- Reservations and Fees: Usage fees, plot fees, and waste disposal rules may change, so please check the official website in advance for the latest information.
- Weather and cold weather precautions: The foot of Mt. Fuji is windy and cold at night. Regardless of the season, cold weather gear and windbreaks are essential. Be aware of sudden changes in the weather.
- Handling of fire: There are rules such as no open fires and the use of a fire pit is recommended. Please follow the rules regarding the use of fire and the designated areas, and make sure to thoroughly check that the fire is out.
- Garbage and Toilets: You may be asked to take your trash with you or there may be strict rules regarding sorting. Please follow the instructions on-site and observe good manners.
- Drones, etc.: Due to strict aviation rules and local regulations around Mt. Fuji, drone use is generally prohibited or may require application. Please check in advance.
- Nature conservation and wildlife: Follow warning signs for vegetation conservation and pasture areas and avoid contact with animals, plants and livestock.
- Mobile phone signals and emergency services: Mobile phone signals may be weak in some areas. It is a good idea to check how to contact emergency services in case of an emergency.
