Higashi Chaya District is a representative tourist spot in Kanazawa that continues to convey the teahouse culture that has continued since the Edo period, and is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government. The streets lined with townhouses with lattice doors are elegant, and at night, the lights of lanterns are lit, giving you a sense of the atmosphere of the former red-light district. Today, it is popular with both domestic and international tourists, and is home to a collection of teahouse experiences, craft shops, cafes, and Japanese confectionery shops.

Highlights

  • Traditional townhouse architecture and cobblestone streets
  • Restaurants and cafes where you can experience teahouse culture
  • A store selling traditional Kanazawa crafts such as gold leaf crafts and Kaga Yuzen
  • The illuminated scenery at night creates a fantastic atmosphere

access

It is about a 10-minute bus ride from JR Kanazawa Station and a 5-minute walk from the Hashibacho bus stop. Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle Park are also within walking distance.

Estimated stay

It takes about 1-2 hours to stroll around the town, shop, and eat. If you add a teahouse experience, you may need to allow more time.

Nearby spots

  • Kenrokuen Garden (Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture) - One of Japan's three most famous gardens, boasting beautiful scenery throughout the seasons
  • Kanazawa Castle Park (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture) - Former castle site of the Kaga domain
  • Kazuemachi Chaya District (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture) — A charming entertainment district on a par with Higashi Chaya District

Points to note

The streets tend to get crowded with tourists, and you may have to wait in line to take photos, especially on weekends and during peak tourist season. Many of the townhouses are still in operation or privately owned, so it's important to observe proper etiquette when entering and taking photos. Business hours and events are subject to change, so we recommend checking in advance.
