Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Harimaya Bridge is a small red bridge that is a landmark in the center of Kochi City. It is said to have originally been built in the Edo period and has been rebuilt many times as the city has developed. Today, it has been developed as a tourist attraction, and its charming red plaster railings and small arches make it a popular photo spot and meeting place.

It is also widely known as part of a tourist route that evokes local legends about love and people with ties to Kochi, such as Sakamoto Ryoma, making it a must-see spot for tourists seeking a taste of "Kochi authenticity."

Highlights

  • The small red-painted balustrade and arch: a photogenic spot in the city, vibrant in the daytime and sometimes lit up at night.
  • Nearby shopping districts and information boards: There are shops selling Kochi specialties and tourist information boards around the bridge, allowing you to experience local culture in a short space of time.
  • Photo Spot/Meeting Place: This is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the city.
  • Legendary and historical interpretive signs: Learn the local stories surrounding the bridge to make your visit even more interesting.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area is crowded on weekends, holidays, during peak tourist season, and on days when cruise ships are in port. Please be considerate of other passersby when taking photos.
  • The bridge is small: The bridge itself is narrow, so please avoid occupying it for long periods of time and be considerate of others when using it.
  • Weather and temperature: Kochi is hot in the summer and relatively warm in the winter, but be careful as the terrain can be slippery on sunny or rainy days. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the summer.
  • Local Manners: Please observe local manners in shopping districts and markets, such as taking your trash with you and smoking while walking.
  • Photography: If you are taking photos of shops or passersby, please ask for permission. If there are lights up at night, please be careful not to disturb the neighbors.
