Shimane Aquarium Aquas (Hamada City, Shimane Prefecture)

Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Shimane Aquarium Aquas is a prefectural aquarium themed around the San'in region and the Sea of Japan. With the aim of deepening understanding of the region's marine environment and ecosystem, the aquarium exhibits, raises, and carries out conservation activities, focusing on fish and marine mammals that live in the local seas. The aquarium features exhibits that recreate the ecosystem of the Sea of Japan in large tanks, performances by marine mammals (such as seals and sea lions), and a wide range of hands-on and educational programs for children, making it a popular place for nature observation and education. Other notable features include outdoor exhibits that take advantage of the aquarium's location near the sea, and events that use local seafood.
