Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Abukuma Cave is a limestone cave located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. Formed over many years by erosion from groundwater, the cave is home to an abundance of stalactites (stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone stalactites) hanging from the ceiling, allowing visitors to observe the natural beauty of its formations up close. The temperature inside the cave remains stable throughout the year, making it easy to visit in any season, and the complex and delicate features of the limestone are highlighted by lighting. The viewing course is well-maintained for easy walking, making it a popular tourist destination for people of all ages, from children to seniors.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Visitors increase during peak tourist seasons, holidays, and weekends, and you may have to wait inside the cave or in the parking lot. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Manners: The cave is a treasure trove of nature. Please do not touch the stalactites, as this will hinder the growth of the stones and the oils from your hands can cause discoloration. Please also observe basic manners, such as staying on the trails and taking your trash with you.
- Clothing and shoes: There are slippery areas and steps inside the cave. Please wear comfortable shoes (sneakers, etc.). The cave is relatively cool throughout the year, so it is a good idea to bring a light jacket.
- Safety: There are dark areas inside the cave. If you are accompanied by small children or elderly people, please walk carefully and follow the instructions of the staff. If you are in poor health, please do not push yourself.
- Seasonal Note: In winter, surrounding roads may be icy and snowy. If visiting in winter, please check road information and prepare tire chains and winter tires.
