Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kurobe Gorge is a scenic deep gorge that represents Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture (Unazuki Onsen area). Its main features are the steep gorge formed by erosion over many years by the Kurobe River, the sheer rock faces, and the lush primeval forests of beech and oak. The area around the Kurobe River is known for pre- and post-war flood control and power generation construction, but it also retains a strong record of construction that made use of the rugged terrain, as well as the history of the people who lived there.

In terms of tourism, the Kurobe Gorge Railway (commonly known as the Trolley Train) is famous for its close-up views of the gorge. The trains use open passenger cars (trolleys) and cars with windows, and you can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons as it slowly runs along the river. Fresh greenery, mountain streams, autumn leaves, and snow all have their own unique charms, and the autumn foliage season is particularly popular as it offers spectacular views.

Highlights

  • View from the trolley train window: From the open-air windows as you travel along the gorge, you can get a close-up view of the cliffs, strangely shaped rocks, and lush greenery.
  • Keyakidaira: The terminus of the Kurobe Gorge Railway. With valley walks, promenades, and hot spring inns, it is a great base for hiking.
  • Kuronagi and Kanetsuri area: There are many attractions such as hidden hot springs, cliff views, and suspension bridges (easy to access from each station).
  • Four SeasonsThe vividness of the new greenery (around May), the coolness of the mountain streams in summer, the autumn leaves (mid- to late October), and the solemn scenery during the snowy season.
  • hot spring: You can enjoy a bath while looking out at the valley at hot spring inns around Unazuki Onsen and Keyakidaira (there are day-use facilities near the station).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station (gateway from the Toyama side).
  • The Kurobe Gorge Railway starts at Unazuki Station. You can access Unazuki Onsen by taking a train and bus from Toyama Station or any Shinkansen station (Hokuriku Shinkansen).
  • If you are driving, take the Hokuriku Expressway Kurobe IC or other routes to Unazuki Onsen via national and prefectural roads. There is a parking lot in the Unazuki area, but it can get crowded during the tourist season, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Kurobe Gorge Railway tickets can be purchased at the station ticket counter, but on busy days such as the autumn foliage season, it is recommended to check seat availability and make reservations (for sections where this is possible) in advance.
  • Note: Kurobe Dam (towards the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route) is a tourist attraction on a different route and has a different access route than Kurobe Gorge.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • The one-way trip on the trolley train (Unazuki ⇄ Keyakidaira) takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours (depending on the train type and stops). If you're just traveling round trip, the total time is approximately 2 to 3 hours.
  • If you want to enjoy a stroll around Keyakidaira, a soak in the hot springs, and lunch, you'll need an additional 2 to 4 hours. If you're taking it easy on a day trip, we recommend a half-day to full day, but if you're staying overnight and want to combine a visit to the hot springs with a stroll around the area, we recommend staying overnight.

Nearby spots

  • Unazuki Onsen Town: A hub where souvenir shops, day-trip bathing facilities, and accommodations are gathered.
  • Kurobe Dam (Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route): A separate route for sightseeing on a large dam. As the seasons and access methods differ, it is possible to combine the two if your schedule allows.
  • Hiking trails and observation decks around Kurobe city and Unazuki: There are many places where you can enjoy the scenery in a short amount of time.

Things to be aware of (crowding, etiquette, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Operation period and congestionThe Kurobe Gorge Railway operates mainly from spring to autumn (generally from late April to November) each year, but may be suspended or have its route shortened during the winter. It can be particularly crowded during the autumn foliage season (mid- to late October), so we recommend making a reservation and leaving early in the morning.
  • What to wear and what to bring:The canyon can be chilly due to the difference in altitude and the shade, so prepare appropriate cold weather gear for the season. Rain gear is a must. Comfortable walking shoes are also necessary.
  • Safety and Manners: Some trolley trains have open-top carriages, so it is dangerous to lean over. Please refrain from smoking or making loud noises on the train, and be sure to take your trash with you. Please do not stray off the trails on the promenades, and follow all signs and regulations.
  • Mobile phone and equipment: There are some areas in the gorge where mobile phone reception is unstable. Food, drink, and toilet facilities are limited to the Unazuki and Keyakidaira areas, so please prepare any necessary items in advance.
  • Hot Spring Manners: When using Unazuki Onsen or any of the open-air baths, please observe bathing etiquette (wiping yourself off at the washing area, handling towels, etc.).
  • natural environment protection: There are rare plants and animals here, so please avoid collecting them and making noise, and be mindful of actions that do not harm the environment.

Kurobe Gorge is a rare tourist destination where you can experience the impressive beauty of the gorge up close, although there are restrictions on transportation and seasons. It's a good idea to check the official website and the latest information on transportation (operation status, timetables, temporary closures, etc.) before visiting.
