Kurokabe Square (Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Kurokabe Square is a charming, retro tourist area in the center of Nagahama City. It is known for having renovated old merchant houses and storehouses into glass workshops, galleries, souvenir shops, cafes, and more, giving the entire townscape an atmosphere of a "glass and city museum." The name "Kurokabe" comes from the black latticework and wall designs, and the area's Japanese-Western style buildings and cobblestone streets are popular with tourists.
Since its establishment with the aim of revitalizing the local area, it has become established as a tourist destination where you can casually enjoy artisanal techniques and modern glass art, with a focus on glass product sales and hands-on classes (glassblowing, sandblasting, glass beads, etc.) The photogenic streets and seasonal events are also part of its appeal.
