Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Korankei is a scenic valley in Asuke Town, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, famous for its autumn foliage along the Tomoe River. Approximately 4,000 maple trees are planted here, and in autumn the valley is bathed in a gradation of red and orange. Originally a scenic spot centered around a local temple (Kosekiji Temple) and village, it was developed as a tourist destination from the Edo to Meiji periods onwards, and is now known nationwide for the Korankei Maple Festival and nighttime illuminations. The charm of the valley, the clear streams and bridges (such as Taigetsu Bridge), and the atmosphere of Asuke, where old townscapes remain, are what make it so appealing.

Highlights

  • Taigetsubashi Bridge area: The wooden bridge over the Tomoe River and the surrounding maple trees are some of the most popular photo spots in Korankei.
  • Riverside Promenade: Take a leisurely stroll along the valley and enjoy the autumn leaves reflected on the river surface and the murmuring of the stream.
  • High ground observation spot: If you climb a little, you will come to a place where you can see the entire valley and the mountains, and enjoy a panoramic view of the autumn leaves.
  • Nighttime illumination (e.g. during the Momiji Festival): The autumn leaves illuminated at night take on a different, more mystical appearance than during the day (please check as the illumination period varies from year to year).
  • Asuke's townscape and traditional culture: The area is dotted with old townhouses, restaurants serving local cuisine, and souvenir shops, so you can enjoy strolling and dining.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

Here are the main ways to access the area by public transport and car. Please note that times and routes may change depending on the season or year, so please check the official website or the latest information from your transport provider beforehand.

  • Train + Bus: From Nagoya, take the JR or Meitetsu line to Toyota City, then take a local bus or sightseeing bus from Toyota City Station or central Toyota City to Asuke (Korankei). Buses run only a limited number of times, so be sure to check the timetable.
  • Direct buses and tours: During the autumn foliage season, there are limited-time direct shuttle buses and day tours that operate. Using these buses is an advantage in securing a seat and avoiding traffic jams.
  • By car: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours via the Tomei Expressway, Nagoya Expressway, and national highways (varies depending on the starting point). There are several paid parking lots on-site, but they tend to fill up on weekends during the autumn foliage season. Please follow the instructions of the parking staff.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short trip (quickly visiting the highlights): 1-1.5 hours
  • If you take a leisurely stroll and include meals: 2 to 3 hours
  • If you include the night illuminations: 3-4 hours in total from evening to night (excluding travel time)

Nearby spots

  • Asuke Townscape: A strolling area lined with old merchant houses, souvenir shops, and restaurants serving local cuisine.
  • Sanshu Asuke Yashiki: A facility that recreates old-fashioned houses and traditional lifestyles (with experiences and exhibits available).
  • Sanage Onsen: A relaxing hot spring resort where you can stop by after a stroll.
  • Obara's Shikizakura (seasonal): There is a famous spot in the nearby area where the Shikizakura bloom in autumn, allowing you to enjoy the autumn atmosphere even more (it is convenient to travel by car).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area gets extremely crowded on weekends and holidays, especially during the peak autumn foliage season (usually from late October to mid- to late November). We recommend visiting early in the morning or on a weekday. The area also gets very crowded during the nighttime illuminations, so consider using public transportation or a tour, and leaving early.
  • Parking: Parking spaces in the area are limited, and they may fill up or become congested during peak hours. Please follow the directions of parking staff and avoid parking on the street.
  • Clothing and footing: The valley has slopes, stone steps, and wet areas, so please bring comfortable shoes and warm clothing. It gets cold at night.
  • Environmental conservation and etiquette: Please observe basic etiquette, such as not touching or breaking plants and trees, taking your trash home with you, and smoking only in designated areas. During the illumination period, there may be restrictions on setting up tripods and occupying the area for long periods of time.
  • Countermeasures against crowds: When it is crowded, it will take time to take photos and move around, so please allow yourself plenty of time for meetings and the last public transportation.
  • Check event information: Information on the dates of the Momiji Festival and illuminations, traffic restrictions, temporary parking, etc. varies from year to year. Please check the official website or Toyota City Tourism Information in advance.

You can enjoy the natural beauty and atmosphere of Korankei throughout the year, but the most popular season is the autumn foliage season. Please plan your visit early and follow the local rules to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
