Shuri Castle (Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture)
Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Shuri Castle is a castle (Gusuku) built during the Ryukyu Kingdom era (14th to 19th centuries) as the political and cultural center of the royal court, and is located on a hill in Naha City. Characterized by a unique architectural style influenced by surrounding cultures such as China and Japan, and a large vermilion roof, it was once a symbol of international trade and royal power. In 2000, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Gusuku and Related Properties of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus."
In 2019, a large-scale fire occurred, destroying the main buildings, including the main hall, but construction and research has since been carried out to restore and preserve them. One of the great attractions of the site is that you can experience the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom through the remains and restored facilities.
