Lake Aoki is a beautiful lake located in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture. Surrounded by the Northern Alps, the lake's crystal clear emerald blue waters are a captivating sight, showcasing different aspects throughout the four seasons. The surrounding area was once a fishing and agricultural area, but in recent years has been developed as a base for leisure and outdoor activities, known as a place where you can enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), fishing, camping, and more. The clear water and the scenery reflected in the mountain shadows make it especially popular with photography enthusiasts and nature walkers.

- The clarity and color of the lake surface: The deep blue and emerald green of the water surface, visible on clear days, is Lake Aoki's greatest attraction.
- Water activities: Kayaks, SUPs, and boats (available for rental) allow you to enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains from the lake. Some operators offer experience programs for beginners.
- Lakeside walks and photo spots: Early mornings and evenings are quiet, making them ideal for taking photos of upside-down mountains (with their reflections).

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Nearest station: Shinano-Omachi Station on the JR Oito Line.
- From the station: From Shinano-Omachi Station, you can access the area by local bus, sightseeing bus, or taxi. However, there are times when local buses are less frequent, so it's a good idea to check the timetable in advance or consider taking a taxi.
- Access by car: Access via national and prefectural roads from the Joshinetsu Expressway, Nagano Expressway, or Chuo Expressway. It takes approximately 20-40 minutes from Hakuba, and often even less time from central Omachi. Parking is available at public and private parking lots along the lake, as well as at the facility (please note that parking may be full depending on the season).
- Long-distance access example (approximate): From Tokyo, it takes about 3 hours via the Nagano Shinkansen or conventional train lines, or about 3-4 hours by car. Please check the latest timetables and road information as this may vary depending on the departure point, route, and traffic conditions.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
- Short walk: 30 minutes to 1 hour (walking around the lake and taking photos).
- Half-day plan: 2-4 hours (kayaking or SUP experience + lunch by the lake).
- 1-day and overnight plans: 1 night or more (a leisurely stay including camping, sightseeing in the surrounding area, nearby hot springs and tourist attractions).
Nearby spots
- Lake Nakatsuna and Lake Kizaki: These are other beautiful lakes scattered around the Omachi and Hakuba areas. Each lake has a different atmosphere, so it's recommended to visit them in groups.
- Hakuba (Hakuba Village): A mecca for mountain climbing and skiing, with plenty of restaurants and accommodation options.
- Kurobe Dam/Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: A tourist route accessible from Omachi (seasonal operation, long travel time).
- Omachi Onsenkyo: A convenient hot spring resort for soothing your fatigue with a bath.
- Omachi Mountain Museum and surrounding hiking trails: Facilities and trails ideal for learning about the local nature and mountaineering culture.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Summer weekends, Obon, and autumn foliage season tend to be crowded. There may be waiting times for parking and rentals, so be sure to plan ahead.
- Water temperature: The water temperature is low throughout the year due to springs and inflows from the Northern Alps. If you are participating in water activities, please consider bringing cold weather protection (wetsuits, etc.). Swimming is at your own risk, and wearing a life jacket is recommended.
- Safety measures: The weather may change suddenly and the wind may become stronger. Check the weather forecast and lake warnings before setting off, and avoid any risky behavior. Be especially careful when engaging in water activities alone.
- Environmental protection and manners: Please take your trash home with you and protect the natural environment around the lake. Bonfires and barbecues may be prohibited outside of designated areas, so please check the rules.
- Facility opening hours: Many rental facilities, campgrounds, restaurants, etc. are seasonal. Check opening hours and reservation status in advance.
- Wildlife and plant protection: As rare plants and animals may live here, do not disturb the natural environment, and refrain from collecting plants or fishing in unauthorized areas.
