Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kirigamine is a plateau (highland plateau) that stretches across the area around Chino City and Suwa County in Nagano Prefecture, and is a representative highland resort located on the southern side of the Yatsugatake mountain range. The plateau ranges in elevation from 1,400 to 1,900 meters, and is characterized by its landscape of rolling grasslands and marshes. It has long been used as a grazing area and a summer resort, and in recent years has become a tourist destination where you can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons along the beautiful tourist road known as the "Venus Line."

Its attractions include the magnificent view of the Yatsugatake Mountains, Mt. Fuji, the Central Alps, and the Southern Alps over the vast grasslands, the clusters of wildflowers and alpine plants (such as Hemerocallis nipponicus), and the majestic autumn pampas grasslands. The combination of windmills, idyllic scenery, and walking paths through the marshes makes it a popular spot for hiking, photography, driving, and cycling.

Highlights

  • Kurumayama (Kurumayama Plateau): Kirigamine's representative peak. The 360-degree view from the summit is breathtaking, with views of Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yatsugatake. Day lilies are beautiful in summer, and Japanese pampas grass in autumn.
  • Yashimagahara Wetland (Yashima Wetland): A walking trail has been established in the high moor, where you can enjoy observing seasonal plants and bird watching. You can also get a close-up look at the moor from the boardwalk.
  • Venus Line observation pointThe view from the Venus Line, a tourist road that crosses Kirigamine, is a famous attraction. You can enjoy magnificent views from the observation decks and parking lots along the way.
  • Alpine plants and flower fields: Day lilies bloom in early summer, and alpine plants from mid- to high altitudes bloom in every season. The best time to see the flowers varies depending on the weather each year.
  • Windmill and grassland scenery: The windmills (wind power generation facilities and tourist windmills) standing on the grassland add an accent to the landscape. The morning mist and evening views are especially beautiful.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + BusThe nearest JR station is Chino Station on the JR Chuo Main Line, or any station on the JR Chuo Main Line heading towards Kami-Suwa or Shimo-Suwa. From Chino Station, you can take a local bus (including seasonal tourist buses) or a taxi towards Kirigamine and Kurumayama Highlands. During the peak season from summer to autumn, tourist buses (such as Alpico Kotsu) often operate, so be sure to check the schedule and operating conditions in advance.
  • carThe most common route is to take the Chuo Expressway → Suwa IC or Okaya IC and then onto the Venus Line. From Chino city, it takes about 30 minutes to an hour via the Venus Line (depending on your destination and traffic conditions). Parking lots are available at major spots, but they can get crowded during peak season, so it's best to arrive early.
  • Bicycles and motorcycles: The Venus Line is a popular route for cycling and touring. Please be aware of the elevation change and traffic volume, and plan accordingly with ample equipment and physical strength.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short-term viewing and photography (from the parking lot to the observation deck, etc.): 30 minutes to 1 hour
  • Walking through Yashima Marsh (round trip on the boardwalk): Approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours
  • Round-trip hike to the summit of Mt. Kurumayama (including one-way ascent): Approximately 2-3 hours (depending on stamina and route)
  • Relaxed sightseeing + dining + exploring multiple spots: Half a day to a full day (4-6 hours)

Nearby spots

  • Kurumayama Plateau (Kurumayama Shoulder and Kurumayama Marsh Area)
  • Yashimagahara Wetland (Yashima Wetland)
  • Resort facilities around Lake Shirakaba and Tateshina Plateau
  • Suwa Taisha Shrine (Kamisha and Shimosha) - A historical and cultural spot in the Suwa region
  • Yatsugatake (Kiyosato area, etc.) — A popular mountain area accessible by car

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Changeable weather: The weather on the plateau can change suddenly, and it can get chilly in the mornings and evenings even in summer. Be sure to bring rainwear and cold weather gear.
  • Strong winds, sunlight, and ultraviolet raysOn windy days, the perceived temperature will drop. On sunny days, the sun is strong, so you will need to take measures against UV rays (such as a hat and sunscreen).
  • Traffic and parking congestion: During peak season (summer flower season, autumn leaves, and the peak season for viewing silver grass), roads and parking lots will be congested. Please consider leaving early in the morning, using public transportation, or using alternative means if parking lots are full.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: The plants in the marshes and grasslands are easily damaged, so please be considerate of the natural environment by staying on the trails, taking your trash with you, and following the rules for pets.
  • Insect and tick protection: There is a risk of ticks in grasslands. We recommend wearing long sleeves and long pants, using insect repellent spray, and checking your surroundings after returning home.
  • Winter Road Closures: During the snowy season, roads may be closed or chains may be required. If you are visiting in winter, please check road and weather conditions in advance.
  • Mobile phone and facility information: There are some areas where the signal is weak and facility opening hours change seasonally, so it is best to check the latest information on the official website or local information center before visiting.

(Additional information) The highlights and things to be aware of change greatly depending on the season you visit. Spring to early summer is the season for flowers, summer is the season for escaping the heat and hiking in the highlands, and autumn is the season for stunning Japanese pampas grass and autumn leaves. If you are visiting by car, please drive safely so you can fully enjoy the scenic drive on the Venus Line.
