Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Awa Odori Kaikan is a facility in the center of Tokushima City where you can experience and learn about the culture of Awa Odori. In addition to learning about the history of Awa Odori and the mechanics of the dance and music through exhibits, there is also a demonstration stage, an experience corner, a souvenir shop, a video corner, and more, so you can experience the charm of Awa Odori all year round. A major attraction is that you can experience the atmosphere in a short space of time, even on any other day, as well as the excitement of the main Awa Odori Festival (every August).
Highlights
- Awa Odori Dance Performance Stage: Regular performances are held in the hall of the building. You can watch authentic dance and live performances of shamisen and taiko drums up close (please check performance times and prices).
- Exhibition Zone: The origins of Awa Odori, as well as displays of costumes and tools, and video commentary provide an easy-to-understand introduction to the history and culture.
- Experience corner: A program where you can actually try out dance choreography and musical instruments (follow the instructions in the museum to participate).
- Souvenirs and gourmet food: Shops selling Awa Odori-related goods and Tokushima specialties, as well as a snack and cafe corner.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The entire city will be extremely crowded during the authentic Awa Odori Festival (August). Please secure seats and tickets in the hall early.
- Viewing etiquette: When taking photos of demonstrations, avoid using flash or making loud noises, and do not block the aisles or stand in the way of the performers. If you are participating in a dance experience, please follow the instructions of the staff.
- Clothing and Climate: Tokushima's summers are hot and humid. It's especially important to take measures against the heat (hat, staying hydrated) in August. Air conditioning is effective indoors, but don't forget to take measures against the heat on your way to and from the venue.
- Languages and Guidance: Guidance in other languages such as English may be limited. Exhibits are often mainly in Japanese, so please check in advance if guidance is available.
- Check the latest information: Opening hours, demonstration schedules, admission fees, and availability of experience programs may change depending on the season and events, so we recommend checking the latest information on the official website or by phone before visiting.
