Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Kokeizan Eihoji Temple is a historic temple located in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture. Nestled in the mountains, this Zen temple features a Japanese garden with moss, a pond, and artificial hills, as well as a tranquil landscape created by the temple buildings. It has long been a popular spot for local worshippers, and is also known for its gardens, which change appearance with each season, and for its autumn foliage, making it popular with tourists and photography enthusiasts.

Highlights

  • Main Hall and Buddhist Hall: The tranquil main hall is the center of worship and viewing. You can feel the solemn atmosphere inside the hall (there may be restrictions on photography and viewing inside the hall).
  • Dry landscape garden with a pond and strolling style: The garden, which makes use of moss, a pond, and flowing water, is perfect for strolling, and you can enjoy the scenery of each season. It is especially worth seeing during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves.
  • Autumn leaves: When the trees in the temple grounds change color, many visitors come to see them, and it is also a famous photo spot.
  • Tea house/Shudo with a view of the garden (if available): There may be a place where you can relax while enjoying the tranquil scenery (please check the admission information in advance).
  • Mountain walking path: Enjoy a walk that blends in with the surrounding nature. The seasonal flowers and moss fields are also a highlight.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest station: Tajimi Station on the JR Chuo Main Line (Tajimi Station is about 30 minutes by rapid train from Nagoya).
  • Travel from the station: It's about a 10-20 minute taxi ride from Tajimi Station, and there are also local buses and community buses available. Walking will take time as it includes slopes and stairs (please allow extra time if walking from the trailhead).
  • By car: Accessible from the Chuo Expressway. If there is a parking lot at the temple, please use that (the number of spaces is limited, so if it is crowded, you may need to use a nearby paid parking lot).
  • Note: Public transport times and routes may vary depending on the season and day of the week. We recommend checking the timetable and official temple information before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour (visiting the main hall and touring the main part of the garden)
  • A leisurely stroll: 1 to 2 hours (including a thorough look around the temple grounds, taking photos, and taking a break around the teahouse)
  • If you also visit the surrounding area: Half a day to a full day (when combining with nearby tourist attractions, museums, and ceramics-related spots)

Nearby spots

  • Tajimi Mosaic Tile Museum: Tajimi is a pottery and tile production area, and this is a spot where you can enjoy designs and exhibits.
  • Ceramic Park MINO (nearby pottery-related facilities): There are cultural facilities scattered around the area offering pottery experiences and exhibitions.
  • Tajimi City Center: There are pottery shops, cafes, and shops where you can enjoy local cuisine.
  • Nearby nature trails: Enjoy easy hiking on the mountain trails and parks around Mount Kokei.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During the autumn foliage season and on consecutive holidays, there are many visitors, and the parking lot and buses are crowded. Visiting early in the morning or on a weekday will allow for a more relaxed viewing experience.
  • Clothing and footing: The temple grounds have stone steps, slopes, and muddy areas. Please wear comfortable shoes. Be careful when it rains as the grounds can be slippery.
  • Visitor etiquette: Please be quiet in the main hall and temple facilities, and follow instructions when using incense and candles. There are areas inside the temple where photography is prohibited, so please follow the signs.
  • Protect the gardens: Please do not enter restricted areas to avoid damaging the moss and plants. Please be sure to take any rubbish home with you or dispose of it in designated areas.
  • Visiting hours and fees: There may be time restrictions or fees for visiting the gardens and Shoin. Please check the temple's official website or Tajimi City tourist information in advance for the latest information.
  • Pets: Whether or not pets are allowed on the grounds varies from temple to temple, so we recommend checking in advance.

───

Before visiting, it's a good idea to check the temple's official information (opening hours, admission fees, event schedules) and public transportation information. Kokeizan Eihoji Temple is known for its seasonal nature and tranquil temple space, so we recommend taking your time and strolling around at your leisure.
