Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tsutanuma is one of the small swamps in the Tsuta region of Towada City, Aomori Prefecture, and is a representative scenic spot of the group of wetlands known as the Tsuta Shichinuma. Surrounded by deep beech and maple forests, the still waters reflect the surrounding trees and sky like a mirror, making it popular with photographers and nature lovers. Locals have long associated it with spring water and marshland scenery, and it has become a popular tourist destination along with nearby hot springs such as Tsuta Onsen.

Its distinctive feature is its changing appearance with each season: fresh greenery in spring, deep greenery in summer, autumn foliage (particularly best seen from mid- to late October), and snow and ice in winter. When a thin mist rolls in early in the morning, you can sometimes see a fantastical "upside-down autumn leaves and scenery," making it a popular photo spot.

Highlights

  • Reflections on the surface of Tsutanuma Pond: The surrounding trees are clearly reflected in the water in the early morning or when there is no wind, and it is especially worth seeing during the autumn foliage season.
  • Walking trail around the seven Tsuta swamps: There are boardwalks and promenades connecting multiple swamps, allowing you to enjoy a stroll that feels like light trekking.
  • Around Tsuta Onsen: There are many traditional hot spring inns scattered around the area, so you can stop by and relax after a stroll.
  • Observing wild birds and wetland plants: You can see flora and fauna unique to wetlands, making it a great place for bird watching.
  • Seasonal Expressions: Enjoy different scenery with each season, such as the fresh greenery of spring, the autumn leaves, and the snowy scenery of winter.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major stations: Aomori Station and Hachinohe Station on the JR Ou Main Line and JR Tohoku Line are the gateways (Towada City has limited train stations, so public transportation requires transfers).
  • Buses and Routes: Tourist buses to Lake Towada and Oirase may operate during peak tourist seasons and on weekends, but the number of services is limited. Please check the latest operating information on Aomori Prefecture and Towada City tourist information sites, or the bus operator's timetable.
  • By car (most convenient): From Aomori City or Hachinohe City, take the national or prefectural roads to Tsuta Onsen and Tsuta Numa. There are parking lots in the area, but the number of spaces is limited, so it's recommended to arrive early during peak seasons. Search for "Tsuta Onsen" or "Tsuta Numa (Towada City)" in your navigation system.
  • Taxi: You can also take a taxi from the nearest station, but please check the distance and fare in advance.

(Note) Routes, road conditions, and winter traffic regulations change every year. Be sure to check the latest traffic and road information before visiting.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: 30 minutes to 1 hour — Photo opportunities at the viewpoint and a short walk around the pond.
  • A leisurely stroll: 1.5 to 2.5 hours — If you take your time exploring the boardwalks and promenades of Tsuta Nananuma, this should be about the time you need, including photography and bird watching.
  • If you include hot springs and sightseeing: Half a day to a full day - If you combine it with Tsuta Onsen, Lake Towada, and Oirase Gorge, it becomes a full-day course.

Nearby spots

  • Tsuta Onsen: There is a historic hot spring inn here, perfect for soaking in the hot springs after a stroll.
  • Lake Towada (near Nenokuchi and Yasumiya): Enjoy the lakeside scenery and sightseeing boats.
  • Oirase Gorge: Enjoy the scenery of waterfalls and clear streams on the mountain stream walking trail (accessible by car from Tsuta Numa).
  • Towada Art Center: Located within driving distance, you can enjoy contemporary art (depending on the season and travel time).
  • Nearby hiking trails: There are trekking trails scattered around the plateau and observation decks.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During the autumn foliage season (especially mid- to late October), the parking lot may fill up due to the large number of tourists. We recommend arriving early on weekends and holidays.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: Wetlands and swamps are delicate natural environments. Please observe basic nature conservation etiquette, such as staying on boardwalks and designated walking paths, taking your trash home with you, and not shouting.
  • Narrow Parking/Aisles: There are some narrow areas in the surrounding roads and parking spaces. Please be careful of oncoming vehicles and avoid parking on the street.
  • Winter conditions: Roads and trails may be closed due to snow or ice. Be sure to bring warm clothing and anti-slip gear (such as crampons), and check road conditions in advance.
  • Photography etiquette: At popular photo spots, please be considerate when waiting in line and do not block other people's views. There may also be restrictions on the use of tripods, so please follow the signs.
  • Use of drones, etc.: Drone flying may be prohibited or restricted by national park or surrounding area regulations. Please check in advance and do not fly without permission.

When visiting, please be sure to bring appropriate seasonal gear (warm clothing, non-slip shoes, rain gear), check local signs and the latest traffic information, and enjoy a safe and well-mannered stroll.
