Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Ashiya Rock Garden is a hiking area rich in nature located at the western edge of the Rokko Mountains in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. Characterized by a landscape that mixes rocky areas with exposed granite (hard rock similar to granite), mountain streams, waterfalls, and deep forests, it has long been popular as a place of "close-by nature" that can be reached in a short distance from the city. Historically, it developed alongside the mountaineering culture of the Rokko Mountains area, and since the Showa period, it has become a popular spot for leisure mountain climbing and parent-child hikes.
Its greatest appeal is the varied course that takes you between huge and oddly shaped rocks, and the opportunity to enjoy the sunlight filtering through the trees, the murmuring of the mountain stream, and the changing vegetation with the seasons (fresh greenery, autumn leaves, early summer wildflowers, etc.).It is also known as a famous spot for viewing the city and sea from the top of the rocks (depending on the weather), cherry blossoms in spring, and autumn leaves in autumn.
Highlights
- Rock Garden: A series of granite outcrops. A challenging walk with plenty of photo opportunities.
- Mountain streams and waterfalls: There are small waterfalls and clear streams along the course, which feel especially cool in the summer.
- Observation point: On a clear day, there is a spot where you can see Osaka Bay and the city areas of Ashiya and Kobe.
- The nature of the four seasons... Fresh greenery, rhododendrons and wildflowers, and autumn leaves are highlights. In winter, the snow and ice create a completely different landscape.
- It connects to nearby mountain trails...It is possible to hike along the ridge from the Rock Garden towards Mt. Rokko, and it is also the starting point for hiking trails.
Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
We recommend using public transportation. The surrounding roads are narrow and parking is limited, so it is easy for the parking lots to fill up, especially on weekends and holidays.
- Nearest station:
- Ashiya Station on the Hanshin, JR, and Hankyu lines (walk or transfer by bus from each line)
- The most convenient route is to walk from the Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station towards the mountain side along the Ashiyagawa River to the trailhead.
- Estimated travel time from the station: Approximately 15-25 minutes on foot from Ashiyagawa Station to the trailhead (varies depending on the route).
- Bus: City and community buses may operate from JR and Hanshin Ashiya Station. Please check the timetable before setting off.
- By car: Accessible from the Ashiya city side. However, parking spaces are limited, so we recommend using public transportation.
Estimated stay (estimated time required)
For first-time hikers and those looking for a lighter hike: Approx. 1.5-2.5 hours round trip (from trailhead to rock garden, including photos and breaks)
If you extend your trip to nearby peaks such as the summit of Mt. Rokko or Kazebuki Rock: Half a day to a full day (approximately 3 to 6 hours)
If you include leisurely strolling, photography, and a picnic, it's a good idea to allow half a day to a full day.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: Trailheads and major points are crowded on weekends, holidays, and during tourist seasons (cherry blossom season in spring and autumn foliage season). To avoid peak times, we recommend leaving on weekdays or early in the morning.
- Footing and equipment: There are many rocky and slippery areas, so be sure to wear trekking shoes or other non-slip footwear. Walking sticks and gloves may also be useful.
- Weather: The rocks can be very slippery and dangerous when it rains. Avoid or consider canceling the hike if rain is forecast or immediately after it has rained. In winter, the risk increases due to freezing and snow accumulation.
- What to wear and bring: drinking water, basic first aid kit, a map (in case your smartphone battery runs out), and garbage bags. It's also a good idea to bring sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Manners: Always give way to others on the hiking trails and enjoy nature quietly. Always take your trash with you. Collecting plants or harming flora and fauna is prohibited.
- Bringing pets: Even if you are allowed on the mountain, please be considerate of other climbers, animals, and plants, and be sure to keep your pet on a leash and take any droppings home with you.
- In case of emergency: If you get lost or injured, do not push yourself too hard. Ask for help from neighbors or passersby, or call the fire department or emergency services (119) on your mobile phone. Mobile phone signals may be out of range in some mountain areas.
Ashiya Rock Garden is an attractive spot where you can enjoy a varied mountain hike in a short amount of time. Please be sure to prepare well in advance and check the weather to enjoy nature safely.
