Yabakei is a scenic valley located in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, and is known for its natural landscape of cliffs, strangely shaped rocks, and beautiful deep valleys. Characterized by columnar joints and rock walls formed by volcanic activity and years of river erosion, the area changes its appearance with the seasons, making it especially popular during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn leaves. A popular scenic spot since ancient times, it is dotted with walking trails, observation decks, and historic temples and shrines, making it a tourist area where nature and culture blend together.

- Eight Views at a Glance: A representative observation spot in Yabakei. You can get a panoramic view of the valley and strangely shaped rocks, making it perfect for taking photos.
- Ao no Domon (Blue Cave Gate): An old cave opened into a steep rock face. Known for its historical background and unique scenery.
- Rocky area around Rakanji Temple: You can experience the historical atmosphere with temples built on rocky cliffs, stone Buddha statues (Arhat statues), stone steps, and more.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)
- Train + Bus: The nearest major station is Nakatsu Station on the JR Nippō Main Line. There are local buses and tourist buses that run from Nakatsu Station to Yabakei, but they are not frequent. Please check the timetable in advance.
- Car (most convenient): Approximately 30-50 minutes by car from the center of Nakatsu City (varies depending on the route and traffic conditions). Access is generally via the Oita Expressway or national highway, and parking lots are available near the tourist spot.
- Taxi/rental car: Public transportation is limited, so it's convenient to get around by rental car or taxi. This allows you to efficiently visit multiple attractions.

- Nakatsu Castle (Nakatsu City): A historic castle in the center of Nakatsu City. It's easy to incorporate into your Yabakei sightseeing itinerary.
- Usa Shrine (Usa City): Although it is a bit far away, many people visit both shrines as they are both historic shrines.
- Surrounding hot springs: There are hot spring facilities scattered around Yabakei where you can take a day trip or stay overnight, so you can relax after a day of sightseeing.
- Nearby hiking trails and roadside stationsThere is also a roadside station that stocks local products and a small nature park.
Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- congestion: The park is especially crowded during the autumn foliage season (late October to early November). The parking lot may fill up, so we recommend arriving early.
- Traffic and Parking: There are sections of the road that are narrow and have many curves. Please drive safely and be careful of passing large buses and regular cars.
- Walking etiquette:Please respect fences and restricted areas on walking trails and observation decks. It is dangerous to jump out from the cliffs or take photos in unreasonable ways.
- Weather/Clothing: The rocks become slippery in rainy weather. Please bring comfortable trekking shoes and warm and rainproof gear. In winter, snow and ice can make the trail difficult to pass.
