Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Utsukushigahara Plateau (Utsukushigahara Kogen) is a highland area in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters. Its distinctive features include peaks such as Ogatou (approximately 2,034 meters) and Ogahana, as well as vast grasslands. Historically used as pastureland, the area is now a place where tourism and the preservation of the plateau's landscape coexist. Its major attractions include 360-degree mountain views (often featuring views of the Northern, Central, and Southern Alps), highland plants and flower fields, and natural scenery such as sunsets, seas of clouds, and starry skies. The area is also dotted with cultural and tourist facilities, including the Utsukushigahara Museum of Art (open-air sculpture exhibition), and the Ogatou observation facility and accommodations.
Highlights
- View of Ogato and Ogahana:A representative view spot on the plateau. You can enjoy the sea of clouds in the early morning, the evening view, and the grand panorama of the Northern and Southern Alps.
- Utsukushigahara Museum of Art:An outdoor art museum dotted with outdoor sculptures. There are plenty of photo spots, including the symbolic "Beautiful Tower."
- Highland grasslands and flower fields:In summer, the grasslands are decorated with burnet plants, alpine plants, and flowers from early to summer. In autumn, the grasses turn red and the leaves and ears of grass create a charming scene.
- Hiking Trails:There are plenty of walking trails that connect the old ranch and ridge paths. You can choose a course that lasts from 30 minutes to several hours depending on your physical condition.
- Stargazing and astronomy:Because there are few city lights, the water is very clear, making it a popular spot for taking photos of the starry sky and nightscape (staying overnight recommended).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

- UV protection:UV rays are stronger at high altitudes, so bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
- Altitude sickness warning:The altitude difference may make you feel unwell. Take it easy, move slowly, and drink plenty of fluids.
- Seasonal access restrictions:In winter, roads are closed and bus services are reduced, so if you are visiting in winter, you should check in advance and bring the appropriate equipment (winter tires, etc.).
- congestion:Parking lots and observation spots can be crowded on sunny days, weekends, and during the autumn foliage season, so we recommend using public transportation and leaving early in the morning.
- Protection of natural and cultural assets:Trespassing on grasslands, restricted areas, and exhibits (museums) is strictly prohibited. Please be sure to take your trash with you and avoid smoking and bonfires outside of designated areas.
- Drone/Filming:There are restrictions and prohibited areas for flying drones. Check the rules in advance and fly only if you have the necessary permission.
- Pets allowed:As this is a former ranch, please observe proper etiquette, such as wearing a leash and disposing of any waste, to avoid any problems with the grazing area or other hikers.
