Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Mount Yotei is a 1,898m-high stratovolcano in Hokkaido's Shiribeshi region, spanning the towns of Kutchan, Kyogoku, and Makkari. Its well-proportioned conical shape has earned it the nickname "Ezo Fuji," and on clear days its beautiful silhouette can be seen from afar. It is part of a national park (Shikotsu-Toya National Park) and is a popular spot for mountain climbing, trekking, snow tours, and photography. Hot springs, ranches, and tourist attractions are clustered at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain's changing appearance with each season makes it a highly attractive tourist resource.

Highlights

  • The beauty of the mountain's shape: Its nearly 360-degree cone-shaped appearance makes it a great photo spot, both from a distance and up close.
  • View from the summit: On a clear day, you can see the Niseko mountain range, the Shakotan Peninsula, the Sea of Japan, and the mountain ranges around Mt. Yotei.
  • Alpine plants: In the summer, there are courses where you can see alpine plants and flower fields, and in the fall the autumn leaves are beautiful.
  • Skiing and Snowboarding: There are plenty of winter activities to enjoy in the surrounding Niseko area. Many people visit the mountain itself for snowshoeing and skiing.
  • Sightseeing at the foot of the mountain: Fukidashi Park in Kyogoku (famous water), hot springs and gourmet food (potatoes and dairy products) in Kutchan, and hot springs and resort facilities in Niseko.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

public transport:

  • Nearest train station: Kutchan Station on the JR Hakodate Main Line. From Kutchan Station, you can take a taxi or local bus to each trailhead and tourist spot.
  • From the airport: It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours from New Chitose Airport by rental car or express bus (via Sapporo). There are also seasonal direct buses (such as the Resort Liner).
  • Local buses: Tourist buses and local shuttles may operate during the summer climbing season, so be sure to check the timetable in advance.

car:

  • It takes about 2 hours from Sapporo on national or prefectural roads (depending on traffic conditions). There are parking lots at each trailhead, but they may be full in the early morning during peak season.
  • Please set "Mount Yotei Trailhead (Directions for Kyogoku, Makkari, Kutchan)" as your destination in your car navigation system or map app.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip (main route for intermediate climbers): Approx. 6-9 hours round trip (approx. 3.5-5 hours ascent, approx. 2-3 hours descent). It depends on your physical strength and the route you take.
  • Short sightseeing (views at the foot of the mountain, photography, hot springs): 2-4 hours. Half a day to a full day is recommended if you want to enjoy the hot springs, Fukidashi Park, and nearby cafes.
  • If you include accommodation: We recommend staying one to two nights in the Niseko/Kutchan area (one night before climbing plus sightseeing in the surrounding area).

Nearby spots

  • Niseko (Hirafu, etc.): A world-famous ski resort with plenty of restaurants and accommodations.
  • Kyogoku Fukidashi Park: A famous spring water spot where underground water from Mt. Yotei springs up. Enjoy strolling and collecting water.
  • Makkari Village: An area where you can enjoy agricultural products, roadside stations, and local cuisine.
  • Kutchan Town: A hub for restaurants, cafes, and accommodations. The area around Kutchan Station is easily accessible.
  • Rusutsu Resort, Lake Toya, etc.: These are tourist destinations that can be visited in about an hour by car.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: The area is crowded on summer weekends and holidays, during the autumn foliage season, and during the winter ski season. We recommend leaving early in the morning.
  • Equipment and stamina: The wind is strong near the summit and there are large temperature differences. Rain gear, warm clothing, hiking boots, food, and water are essential. Be prepared for sudden bad weather even in summer.
  • Hiking trail conditions: The required time and difficulty vary depending on the course. The terrain is often steep, so be careful not to slip and fall. Please check the route information and the latest hiking information in advance.
  • Winter dangers: There are many dangers such as avalanches, freezing, and poor visibility, so proper equipment (crampons, ice axes, beacons, etc.) and winter mountaineering skills are required. Experienced hikers or those accompanied by a guide are recommended.
  • Nature conservation and etiquette: Please follow basic rules such as always taking your trash with you, not damaging vegetation, and staying on the hiking trails.
  • Wild animals: In some areas, it has been reported that large animals such as brown bears live. Please take basic precautions such as carrying a bear bell, shouting to warn others, and managing your food supply.
  • Transportation and Parking: Trailhead parking can fill up, so plan to use public transportation or arrive early in the morning.

Note: When planning a climb, be sure to check the latest weather and climbing information (such as whether trails are passable and snow accumulation information), and make a reasonable plan with the appropriate equipment. Mt. Yotei is a mountain with beautiful scenery and nature, but safety is our number one priority.
