Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Hosooka Observatory is a popular viewpoint in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, offering a panoramic view of the Kushiro Wetlands. With the large meandering Kushiro River and the vast marshland spreading out below, the view is captivating, with its changing seasonal scenery. The early morning mist and sunsets are particularly popular with photography enthusiasts, and the observation deck is known as one of the most popular viewing spots in Kushiro Wetlands National Park. The observation deck itself is equipped with wooden decks and benches, allowing you to easily enjoy the scale of the marshland.

Highlights

  • The meandering Kushiro River: You can get a bird's-eye view of the unique curves created by the marshland and river.
  • Early morning fog and scenery: The fog that forms around sunrise envelops the marshland, creating a fantastical landscape.
  • Sunset and evening view: The sunset reflected on the vast sky and marshland is magnificent. It is especially beautiful at dusk on a clear day.
  • Bird and animal watching: Depending on the season, you can see a variety of migratory birds and marshland creatures (you are more likely to see red-crowned cranes in the surrounding protected areas).
  • The changing seasons: fresh greenery in early summer, deep greenery in summer, red leaves in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter - each season has its own unique charm.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Walking: The nearest station is Hosooka Station on the JR Senmo Main Line. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes to walk from the station to the observation deck (some parts of the walking path are unpaved and uphill).
  • From Kushiro Station: Approximately 20-30 minutes by car (depending on the season and traffic conditions). Renting a car is convenient.
  • Bus: There are some sections where you can use local buses from Kushiro city and the Akan area, but please check the timetable in advance as there are few buses.
  • Parking: There is a parking space near the observation deck (limited number of spaces). Please note that it may fill up during busy times.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short sightseeing tour: 30 minutes to 1 hour (including photography)
  • Sunrise and sunset: 2-3 hours (including photography and walking around the area)
  • If you want to enjoy bird watching and leisurely strolls: About half a day

Nearby spots

  • Kushiro Marsh National Park (surrounding observation decks and walking trails)
  • Norokko (a tourist train on the Senmo Main Line that runs slowly through the marshes during the season)
  • Tsurumidai and Tsurui Village Red-Crowned Crane Preserve (crane observation spot)
  • Kushiro City (city sightseeing including Kushiro City Marsh Observatory, Kushiro Port, Washo Market, etc.)

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: During the autumn foliage season, on consecutive holidays, and in the early morning and evening hours, the parking lot may fill up due to the large number of visitors. Please consider using public transportation or arriving early.
  • Clothing and equipment: The area around the observation deck is often windy and cold. Please take measures to protect yourself from the cold, especially in the early morning and in winter. Some areas of the ground are unpaved, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
  • Insect repellent: There are many mosquitoes and horseflies in some areas during the summer, so be sure to bring insect repellent.
  • Safety: There is little lighting and it is dark at night, so if you are traveling early in the morning or at night, please bring a flashlight or similar.
  • Manners: As this is a natural park, please be sure to take your trash with you and do not touch the plants or animals. Please be considerate and do not make noise and disturb other tourists.
  • Drones: Operating drones in and around national parks may be restricted or prohibited. Check jurisdictional rules before flying and may require permission.
  • Weather: Fog and sudden weather changes are common in the marshes, so be sure to check the weather forecast beforehand.

Hosooka Observatory is a place where you can easily experience the grandeur of the Kushiro Wetlands. When enjoying photography and nature observation, please allow yourself plenty of time and remember to be considerate of the surrounding nature and other visitors.
