Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Tsukiji Honganji is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji sect temple (Nishi Honganji branch) located in Tsukiji, Chuo Ward, Tokyo. It has a long history dating back to the Edo period, and the current temple complex was built as part of the reconstruction project after the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923) and was completed in 1934 based on a design by architect Chuta Ito.
The exterior has a stately design reminiscent of stonework, and is characterized by a unique style incorporating domes and colonnades reminiscent of ancient Indian and West Asian architecture. Though constructed of modern reinforced concrete, the temple's solemnity and exotic atmosphere coexist, drawing attention from both tourists and architecture enthusiasts. In addition to religious events, the temple also hosts cultural events such as concerts and lectures, making it an open presence for the local community.
