Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Tachimachi Misaki is a small cape located at the southeastern tip of Hakodate City, Hokkaido, and is a scenic coastal spot jutting out into the Tsugaru Strait. Its proximity to the city center and easy access means it has long been popular with locals and tourists alike. From the tip of the cape, you can get a panoramic view of the ocean, and on clear days you can see the Tsugaru Peninsula and the silhouette of land on the opposite shore. It is also known as a famous spot for watching sunsets. There are walking paths and observation spaces around the cape, making it an attractive spot to stroll around and observe seabirds and seasonal flowers.

Highlights

  • Observation Deck/Panoramic View from the Cliff: You can see the distant view across the Tsugaru Strait and the ships passing by. The view is especially beautiful at dusk.
  • Promenades and walking trails: The promenades around the cape can be enjoyed as a light hike. It's pleasant to stroll while feeling the sea breeze.
  • Seasonal nature observation: Enjoy the changing nature of the seasons, from seaside flowers in spring to summer to migratory birds and the harsh seascape in autumn and winter.
  • Photo spot: Perfect for taking photos of the contrast between the sea and the cape, the ships coming and going, and the sunset.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: JR Hakodate Station (Hakodate city center).
  • Bus: Take the Hakodate Bus (bound for Yunokawa, etc.) from Hakodate Station to the Tatemachi Misaki bus stop, which takes about 20-30 minutes. Routes and times change depending on the season, so please check the latest timetable before setting off.
  • Tram + Walking/Bus: You can also take the tram to the stop heading towards Yunokawa, then transfer to a bus or walk (please note that it is quite a distance if you walk).
  • By car: Approximately 15-25 minutes from central Hakodate (depending on traffic conditions). There is a small parking space near the cape, but the number of spaces is limited, so it is recommended to arrive early during peak season.
  • Taxi: It takes about 15-25 minutes by taxi from Hakodate Station. This is convenient for groups or those with a lot of luggage.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short: 30-45 minutes (enjoy the view and take photos)
  • A leisurely stroll: 1-2 hours (walking along the promenade and taking breaks and taking photos in the surrounding area)
  • Sunset Viewing: Over an hour depending on your arrival time (if you want to see the sunset, plan ahead and arrive early)

Nearby spots

  • Mount Hakodate (night view spot): Accessible by car or ropeway, it is a spectacular sight both day and night.
  • Motomachi area: A historic walking area lined with churches, slopes, and Western-style architecture.
  • Hakodate Bay Area (Red Brick Warehouse): A tourist spot where you can enjoy shopping and gourmet food.
  • Yunokawa Onsen: This area is home to many hot spring inns, making it convenient for a relaxing soak or overnight stay.
  • Goryokaku Park: A star-shaped castle park with beautiful seasonal scenery and a museum.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: It gets crowded at dusk and during the tourist season (spring to autumn holidays and summer vacation). Parking lots and observation areas tend to get crowded, so we recommend arriving early.
  • Weather and cold weather: The sea breeze is strong, so the temperature often feels lower. Be sure to take measures to protect yourself from the cold, especially in spring, autumn, and winter. In winter, be careful of frozen roads and strong winds.
  • Footing: There are unstable and slippery areas near the tip of the cape and cliffs. Please wear comfortable shoes and obey all fences and no-entry signs.
  • Nature Conservation and Manners: Please take your trash with you and be considerate of plants and wildlife. If you have pets, please keep them under control so they do not cause a nuisance to those around you.
  • Facilities and toilets: Facilities and toilets around the cape may be limited, so it is best to prepare in advance.
