Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome (commonly known as the North Breakwater Dome) is an arch-shaped concrete breakwater located in the port of Wakkanai City, Hokkaido. It is a civil engineering structure built in the early Showa period to protect the port from waves, and is characterized by its unique appearance, consisting of a continuous arch stretching for a total length of approximately 400 meters. While it serves as a functional breakwater, the dome-shaped corridor stretching out to the seaside creates a photogenic landscape, and in recent years it has become widely known as a tourist spot. The contrast between the rough sea and the geometric arch is captivating, and the sunset and winter scenery are particularly popular.
Highlights
- Continuous arch structure: The corridor with a series of uniform arches has a unique rhythm and is recommended for architecture and civil engineering enthusiasts.
- Seascapes and spray: On days with low pressure or strong northerly winds, waves crash onto the shore, creating a dynamic sight (however, please stay inside the fence as it can be dangerous).
- Sunrise and sunset: The beautiful colors of the sunset and sunrise over the sea and the silhouette of the arch make this a popular photo spot.
- Distant islands and mountains: On clear days, you can enjoy views of Rishiri Island, Rebun Island, and the Soya Strait.
- Seasonal Expressions: Enjoy different scenery depending on the season, such as the refreshing sea in summer, the autumn sky, and the monochrome world of snow and ice in winter.

- Crowds: It can get crowded during the summer tourist season and at dusk. If you want a quieter view, we recommend going in the morning or early on a weekday.
