Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Rebun Island is a small island located northwest of Rishiri Island in northern Hokkaido, and is known for its abundance of alpine plants, so much so that it is nicknamed the "Floating Island of Flowers." It has been a habitat for the Ainu people for over a thousand years, and fishing and kelp harvesting were thriving businesses there. Since the Showa era, it has been developed as a tourist destination, and the scenery when the entire island turns into a flower garden of alpine plants from June to August attracts many people. The major attractions are the coastal cliffs, clear sea, endless pristine scenery, and views of Rishiri Fuji (Mount Rishiri).

Highlights

  • Cape Sukoton: A cape at the northernmost tip of Rebun Island. A scenic spot where you can see cliffs, emerald green sea, cargo ships and seabirds.
  • Cape Sukai: A cape famous for its crystal clear waters. The water is so clear that it's a popular photo spot.
  • Climbing Mount Rebun: The highest peak on the island (approx. 490m). From the hiking trail, you can enjoy panoramic views of alpine plants and the ocean. Courses range from half a day to a full day depending on your physical strength.
  • alpine plant community: A rare environment where you can see alpine plants such as Rebun Usukisou and Ezo no Hakusan Ichige near the coast. Photography and observation are allowed only on designated routes.
  • Walking around the villages of Kafuka and Funadomari: The atmosphere of a port town, seafood from local restaurants, and a scattering of guesthouses and private lodgings.
  • Trekking course (walking path connecting the east and west sides of the island): The route varies from relatively flat stretches along the coastline to hilly mountain paths.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Nearest major station: Wakkanai Station (JR Soya Main Line, terminal station). Wakkanai is accessible from all over Hokkaido by train, bus, and seasonal flights.
  • Ferry from Wakkanai: Ferries depart from Wakkanai Ferry Terminal (Wakkanai Port) to Kafuka Port and Funadomari Port on Rebun Island. The journey time varies depending on the ferry and weather, but is generally around 2 hours (it can be shorter if you use a high-speed ferry).
  • Via Rishiri Island: There are short regular routes (high-speed boats and ferries) from Rishiri Island to Rebun Island, and many travelers combine this with a day trip to Rishiri Island (travel time varies depending on the boat).
  • Transportation within the island: The most convenient ways to get around the island are by local bus (limited seasonal service), taxi, rental bicycle (electric assist recommended), rental car or motorbike. Many tourist spots are easily accessible by car or bus, but many people also enjoy trekking on foot.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Day trip: It is possible to arrive on an early morning flight from Wakkanai, visit the island's highlights (Cape Sukoton, Cape Sukai, and the Kafuka area), and return to Wakkanai on an evening flight. However, the travel time is long and there is little time to relax.
  • 2 days, 1 night: A standard plan that allows you to leisurely see the main sights, do some short treks, and enjoy local cuisine.
  • 2 nights or more: Recommended if you want to fully enjoy nature, such as by climbing Mt. Rebun, observing flowers, or taking a tour of Rishiri Island.
  • Trekking: Climbing Mount Rebun takes half a day to a full day round trip. Plan accordingly based on the course and your physical strength.

Nearby spots

  • Rishiri Island (Rishiri Fuji): Accessible by ferry from Rebun. Enjoy mountain climbing, hot springs, and ocean views.
  • Wakkanai (Cape Soya): A tourist hub and transportation hub for destinations such as Cape Soya, the northernmost point of Hokkaido, and Wakkanai Park.
  • Sarobetsu Plain: A marshland area stretching from central to northern Hokkaido, it is attractive for bird watching and marsh scenery.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds and reservations: Accommodations and ferries are crowded during the summer high season (especially late June to August), so please make your reservations early.
  • Flower and nature conservation: The alpine plants on Rebun Island are very fragile. Please strictly follow the rules, such as staying on designated paths and trails, not picking flowers, and not trampling on them.
  • weather:Strong sea breezes, sudden fog, rain, and temperature drops are likely to occur. Please bring a windproof and waterproof jacket and clothes that can be layered.
  • traffic situation:Public transportation on the island is limited. Please check bus and ferry arrival and departure times in advance and allow plenty of time.
  • Cash and shopping: Many stores and accommodations on the island only accept cash. ATMs are limited, so it's a good idea to bring enough cash with you.
  • Garbage Manners: Please follow local rules such as taking your trash home with you and smoking in designated areas, and remember to be considerate of local residents.

Rebun Island is an island that is full of charm, with untouched nature and flowers. Please check your transportation and accommodation arrangements in advance, be mindful of nature conservation, and take your time to enjoy the island's scenery.
