Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
Usui Pass Railway Culture Park is a cultural facility located near the former Yokokawa Station that preserves and displays the railway equipment and rolling stock that once crossed the Usui Pass. Usui Pass is known for its steep gradient of 66.7‰ (per mille), and a major feature of the park is that auxiliary electric locomotives (such as the EF63) developed to run on this section, steam locomotives, and locomotive depot facilities (turntables and roundhouses) are preserved and displayed on-site. The park's appeal lies in the fact that visitors can learn about the technical features and operating history of the now-defunct Shinetsu Main Line (between Yokokawa and Karuizawa) through actual exhibits, making it a popular destination for railway enthusiasts, families, and those interested in history and industrial tourism.
