Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)
The Sand Museum is an indoor museum specializing in sand sculptures, located near the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Since opening in 2006, it has held a themed exhibition each year and is known for displaying large-scale, intricate sand sculptures created by sand sculptors from around the world. The gigantic works, made entirely from sand and water, are maintained using highly advanced preservation techniques, and as they are exhibited indoors, they can be viewed in all weather conditions, allowing visitors to appreciate them in detail.
Its features include "annual changing theme exhibitions," "participation of international artists," and "scale and detailed expression that surpasses existing sculptures." The exhibition attracts many repeat visitors because each time a group of works with different narratives and cultural backgrounds are displayed.

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)
- Crowds: The museum tends to be busier during Golden Week, summer vacation, public holidays, and weekends, so if you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays or in the morning.
- Photography etiquette: Photography is permitted in most areas, but there may be restrictions on using flash, tripods, and monopolizing the facility, so please follow the instructions of staff and signs inside the facility.
- Preservation Considerations: Because the sand sculptures are delicate, there are areas and fences that prevent you from getting close to the works. Please observe basic etiquette such as not touching or crossing the fences.
- Clothing and weather: The museum is indoors, but if you're heading to the surrounding sand dunes, it's a good idea to bring some sand protection (shoes you don't mind getting dirty, sunglasses, a hat, etc.). Strong winds can blow sand around easily, so be sure to protect your face and belongings.
- Barrier-free access: The museum is relatively easy to navigate as it is an indoor exhibit, but the sand dune area has many steps and soft ground, making it difficult for wheelchairs to move around in some areas. If you require wheelchair access, please contact the facility in advance.
- Check for the latest information: Opening hours, closing days, admission fees, special events, etc. may change at any time, so please check the official website or social media for the latest information before visiting.
(Note) Specific opening hours, admission fees, access times, etc. may change. Please check the Sand Museum's official website or Tottori City's tourist information for the latest information.
