Overview (history, characteristics, attractions)

Lake Biwa Bridge is one of the most iconic bridges spanning the southern part of Lake Biwa, including Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, and is a road bridge that allows visitors to enjoy the scenery of Lake Biwa up close. Since its construction, it has greatly improved the convenience of crossing the lake, playing an important role not only for commuting and logistics for local residents, but also as a tourist route. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy views of the vast surface of Lake Biwa, the mountains in the distance, and the changing seasonal scenery (fresh greenery, sunsets, winter scenery, etc.), making it a popular spot for driving, cycling, and photography.

Highlights

  • A sense of openness as you view the lake surface up close: From the middle of the bridge, you can get a panoramic view of the water and sky of Lake Biwa on both sides. On a clear day, the blue lake surface and the shadows of the clouds are beautifully reflected.
  • Evening and night views: The beautiful sunset reflected on the lake surface makes this a popular photo spot. At night, the contrast between the illuminated bridge and the surrounding street lights and the lake surface is also captivating.
  • Walking/Cycling: You can enjoy the lakeside at your own pace using the footpaths on the bridge and the surrounding lakeside cycling roads (please note that whether cycling is permitted varies depending on the section, so please check).
  • Observe birds and changes in the water surface: Depending on the season, you can observe natural phenomena such as migratory birds and small ripples on the lake surface up close.
  • Photo spots: The observation spaces near the bridge entrance and exit, along the lakeshore, and the distant view from the opposite shore are all suitable for taking photos.

Access (nearest station, transportation, etc.)

  • Train + Bus/Taxi: You can access the area by bus or taxi from Moriyama Station on the JR Biwako Line (Tokaido Main Line) or stations heading towards Otsu. There are also bus routes that run from some stations, so please check the schedule in advance.
  • By car: The bridge is easily accessible from the surrounding main roads and lakeside roads. Parking lots and lakeside parking lots are common. Parking lots can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons.
  • Bicycles and Footpaths: You can also cross the bridge using the lakeside cycle path. Cycling allows you to enjoy the lakeside scenery at your own pace, but please be sure to follow the pedestrian and bicycle lanes and traffic rules.

Estimated stay (estimated time required)

  • Short visit: If you just want to enjoy the view from the bridge, it will take about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Photography/Walking: If you want to take a short walk around the surrounding observation spots and the lakeside, it will take 1 to 2 hours.
  • If you include cycling and sightseeing in the area: Half a day to a full day (extend it if you visit nearby parks and tourist spots).

Things to be aware of (crowds, manners, seasonal precautions, etc.)

  • Crowds: On weekends and holidays, especially at dusk, the number of cars and people visiting the area increases. Please be mindful of securing parking spaces and avoiding traffic jams.
  • Safety and Manners: Parking on bridges for extended periods of time or taking photos on the road can be dangerous. Please use sidewalks or designated viewing areas and avoid obstructing vehicles.
  • Weather and season: Strong winds can blow on the lake, so be careful of temperature changes and gusts. In winter, be careful of icy and slippery roads. If you're aiming for the sunset, dress appropriately for the drop in temperature.
  • Wildlife and Nature Conservation: There are many wild birds and nature around the lake. Please do not feed them or leave any trash behind.
  • Traffic rules: Bicycle and pedestrian access and vehicle restrictions may vary depending on the location and time of day. Please follow local signs.
